I've just been pondering this lately. I had a TL1000s before this Uly, and I kind of miss the more aggressive positioning. What are your opinions on a hypothetical Uly for 1125cr trade? I've never tested a CR, but they seem pretty rad. |

The CR is an amazing motorcycle, and is superior to the Uly in nearly every way. I absolutely love mine. I would keep the Uly as a second bike though, they do complement each other nice despite the Cr being better overall. |

I am halfway considering the same trade, as I have permission from the old lady to buy a road couch, as long as I make room in the garage. I wouldn't need the Uly as a touring machine then, but I'd still miss having a Buell. |

I own both, and they are near polar-opposites. As Froggy said, they complement each other nicely (although I would contest his "superior in every way" statement). "Better" is a measure of what you want it to do, versus what is is built to do. If you want ridiculously fast, reasonable comfort, amazing handling and excellent brakes - yes, it could be considered "better". If you want torque, tons of baggage/storage, a neutral riding position, powerful-but-not-ridiculous...a Uly may be "better" for you and what you're doing. End result? Ride one. For as long as you can. THEN decide which is "better" for you. They are both amazing motorcycles...but it's like asking which of your kids is "better" than the other. |

I personally think the CR was one of Buell's biggest motorcycle mistakes of all time! They had to literally give them away at Bell's fire sale. Every other Buell model was sold out at the dealers in this area and some dealers had dozens of CR's left! I was speaking to the sales rep at Hal's at the 2009 Buell homecoming and they hadn't sold one at that time. Ukes had only sold one and Lakeshore wouldn't even bring one in to show. McHenry Harley-Buell picked up all remaining Bells from dealers all over the country and they had several dozen CR's for a long time! Like I said they were nearly giving them away at the end. In fact they still had a couple left last year. |

Where's the mistake? I think of my CR as an updated S1W - naked, in-your-face, snorty, arrogant, and a TON of fun. They didn't get a lot of time to market them, which is a shame. I got the CR because riding one back to back with an R...I liked the gearing better. The R is a great bike, but 18% shorter gearing on the CR makes it much more fun around town and in the mountains. With 11,000 RPM and a six speed, it will still go more than fast enough for me, but the acceleration out of turns is just amazing. By comparison, the R felt almost...flat, and it seemed like I was never in the "right" gear. The CR, I can ride like one of my tubers - gear choice, powerband, and fun. Only on about a double-scale - this thing really is stupid-fast. I think if BMC had more time to market the CR and develop its image...it would have taken off like a rocket. Perhaps the SX will be a similar bike, and we'll see its full potential. |

Joe, I test rode a 1125CR on a 7 mile test ride. I pulled over off the road because I had a bad cramp in my right leg. I eventually rode the bike back to the dealer with my right leg hanging because it was cramping so bad when I tried riding with it on the foot peg. I don't think I was ever so glad to have a test ride end. I know I'll never make that mistake again! If someone was to offer me $3000.00 and their 1125CR for my July, I'd decline the offer! I have no use for a motorcycle I can't ride! There are still 1125CR's available out there, bit I'm NOT interested in one! |

"I know I'll never make that mistake again!". Not a mistake Don just a test to find if it works/fits you. I sat on a R once but found it was too small for my height. In fact few bikes have a frame size/setup that works for me and the reason, of many, why I bought a Uly in the first place. The Uly is also a VERY practical bike and well suited to our modern times ie bad roads, speed limits, etc. It is also plenty fast enough. Mine gets to 100 easy, now that it is well run in, and 120 is no problem. I have had very fast sports bikes, like the R, in the past but have never been able to hang on past 120 without a "barn door" fairing up front. The other day I even got to "WOT" on my Uly, that is wide open throttle, and trust me that in 4th is going like a bat out of hell. The point is that with a Uly you can use all its power all of the time. It also handles better than most sports bikes that would cost more than twice the price. I have thought of converting a CR into a Uly, AX type thing, but at the end of the day it would just be a faster Uly. Of which there seems little point given the use and cost. |

A bike not fitting you doesn't make it a "mistake" by the manufacturer... I completely understand not wanting to ride a bike that doesn't fit you. That's why I just spent time and money converting my ex-wife's M2L into a standard-height machine so I can ride it without feeling like my boys were skimming the ground. I'd also suggest keeping an open mind about the CR, or a similar bike. I love my Uly, don't get me wrong, and it is by FAR the bike I ride most because it is accomodating, has pack-mule storage capacity, and even fully loaded is capable of dragging pegs on the Dragon. That said...I also love my CR. I'm 6'4". 34" inseam. Legs are half titanium from an accident years ago, and not nearly as flexible as they once were. But...a $90 set of Ulysses footpegs (1" drop from stock) and a $100 Buell Touring seat (1" rise from stock), and I've done 1000 mile days with no issues on the CR. Any bike, with small tweaks, can be helped to fit a rider...but again, don't label it as a manufacturer's "mistake" just because you don't fit on it. That is a huge dis-service to potential owners/riders who MAY fit on it, who love the brand, and who want to pick one up. Saying the CR was one of Buell's biggest motorcycle mistakes of all time because it gave you a leg cramp...is a little extreme. (Message edited by ratbuell on July 06, 2013) |

Sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don't. I have both: Uly & CR. The Uly is my practical daily ride, it carries my lunch. Fat guy's gotta eat. If I'm on a trip with a date, she gets a side bag for her girlie stuff, a side bag for for me, and the top bag for the road. Did 4200 miles in nine days last Sept. ...and sometimes I just need to git it dun! CR tyme. Did a 750 mile day trip to Key West for lunch this past Jan. Bad, bad idea but a fat guy's gotta eat. Next time I'll spend the night. Don't blame the ride. Two different bikes, two different riding styles. If it wasn't for work, I'd never have a excuse not to ride! If the Uly's a "Hug" then the CR is the "Kiss" cause sometimes you feel like a nut! |

"Any bike, with small tweaks, can be helped to fit a rider". Very true. I am always amazed at how many riders just "ride out of the showroom" and never adjust anything on the bike to suit them. Or buy something like an Aprilia 250cc 2-stroke racing bike and expect to be able to tour on it with the comfort of a 1800cc Goldwing. Test rides at dealers can be a problem for many reasons. The Uly I tested at a dealers was TOTAL rubbish and no one in there right mind would want one if that was they way it was going to run. That thing run so bad it made my eye balls hurt. Clearly something was not right with it but many may have thought it was normal for the bike. More so because that was the dealers comment to me ie "thats what they all run like". |

...which is why I sold the hell out of Buells when I worked at the dealer. 1. NO "vroom-vroom" / turn it off so people can hear them run. 2. "how much do you weigh? Grab a cup of coffee and give me 3 minutes, I'll set the bike up for you" before EVERY test ride. Lots of times, the "set the bike for you" got me a blank stare...at which point the coffee was ignored, and 3 minutes turned into 15 as I set the suspension while explaining *why* I was doing what I was doing to the customer who was watching me do it. After that...we rode. And generally...the customer left with their new bike that same day. I miss those days... |

I test rode a 06 uly. At mancusos in 06 went over brakes , lights and other oddoties in parking lot before leaving I thought I was gonna die 3 times in traffic with bike stalling Out. What a piecer and headed back to dealer. Never buy one oof these I thought. Took side streets so traffic wasn't so bad. After another 10 minutes or so, with steady riding, bike just changed. Motor smoothed o ut and run likke ape. Permagrin of the best kind. Ecm learned and I saw then what uly was good for. Bike did not have enough time on it to even have ecm line out. First experience with fuel injecton and lack of dealer prep. So I waited till 08 and bought a used 07. Oh yeah! |

"Lots of times, the "set the bike for you" got me a blank stare." Yes I do sometimes wonder at people these days. Maybe it is the "plug and play" culture. Or maybe the Net. Like "I removed my engine and then it fell out while riding to work. PS I did have a few bolts left after doing this. Is this the problem and I want the answer NOW?". This, of course, then makes it a crap bike and would NEVER have happened with a Honda. Which is the best thing to buy for them. |

I would love to add a crotch rocket to the garage to complement the Uly and most of my bikes have been Japanese inline 4s, the polar opposite of the Uly engine. The 1125CR can certainly be had at bargain prices compared to the Japanese liter bikes, but if I get another bike I think I would go for something with less "character", something seamlessly boring and reliable as a stone axe. |

There is a guy on NH Craigslist right now offering to trade his 1125 for a Uly, so if you're interested, look him up. It has some very nice factory body work which makes it look quite nice. |

I didn't realize that the 1125 could conjure up such strong opinions. I saw the one up for sale on ADVrider. I would be more interested in the CR over the R. Also, 4,000 miles with little use screams "problems" to me once it starts getting serious use...I just replaced a bunch of electrical stuff on the Uly, wouldn't want to do it again soon. |
