I filled up 2008 Uly XT with 93 octane last week for a quick 50-60 mile ride. I usually fill up with 89 although this station only had 87 or 93. After I filled up, as I started out about 15 ft from that station, it died. It stumbled a bit, but restarted and ran fine to home about 3 miles. Left again about 10 minutes later for my ride and heading out the development, it hiccupped, surged and engine light turned on which only lasted for about 30 seconds then shut off. Bike rode fine for 60 miles thereafter.

Could filling with 93 octane had this impact ?

Given stock battery - could it have had any impact here ?

Maybe a wee bit of water in that 93 tank? I'll bet its not a popular product!

I've had similar issues with using gas with too much oxygenates, such as ethanol. The bike runs super when hot, but when I let it cool down a while, it'll run like crap until it's fully warmed back up. Fortunately, we have a filling station close by that sells non-oxygenated premium, which makes all the difference.

Yeah, sounds like water in the fuel, I had that same problem when I fueled up at a rural station, dumped the tank and put some fuel from a reliable fuel station, problem went away.

Always get a printed receipt when filling up with fuel. This has saved me great expense, twice.

I don't see how it would be the octane number.
In 15ft, not even sure any of your new gas would have made it through the fuel system that quickly.
But maybe if there was a slug of water it could fall to the bottom of tank and get picked up that quickly??
I run 93 octane (AKI) with 10% ethanol normally, just because it is what is available locally.
I have occasionally used a 90 octane no-ethanol that 1 station has, but it seems to ping a bit more noticeably under roll on load with the octane drop.

Talking strictly about octane rating, the 93 octane rating was not the problem.

Running gas with an octane rating lower than that specified for the engine can cause detonation (pinging) which can rob power and over time cause damage. But running gas with a higher octane rating than specified has no effect other than wasting your money.

The Ulysses Owner's Manual (mine anyway) specifies 91 octane-rated gas. So if you can't find 91 octane, go higher, not lower.
