Running some errands yesterday, I heard a new noise in my Uly's primary. Idling in neutral, it has what I can best describe as a rattle. Pull the clutch in...it goes away. Chain is in spec as of about 2 weeks ago, no debris in the fluid at that time. I'm about 600 miles from the 30k service, so I'll likely take the primary off and pull the clutch pack to see if I lost the grenade plate...but I'd think that would make noise ON the clutch, not off? Or...could I be looking at transmission noise? 29,400 miles, 2006 Uly, one-owner, Syn3 since the 1k service. Rides fine, shifts fine, finds neutral fine...just has this new noise. Is it just a "feature"? Or do I really need to dig next week when I do the 30k? |

Dunno what the grenade plate sounds like. Hope it's not the crank. |

Pulling in the clutch wouldn't affect the noise if it was the crank going; hopefully it's something very minor. |

I'm going on the assumption its a maintenance item. 30k is a fair interval for noises to start appearing. We shall see... |

Good to know Hugh. Thanks for sharing your wisdom you paid for with pain. |

Change the oil with 60 Wt Amsoil - cheap enough to see if it is the old oil - sounds like the clutch plates are doing the ducati rattle ... |

As far as i know; The tubers had a clutch spring plate that was riveted together and was prone to failure. This is what is called a 'grenade plate' Your uly should not have a 'grenade plate' but a modern spring steel plate. Similar function but different design, so it's probably not your problem And to clarify: it's noisy when the clutch is engaged and in neutral? Before you pull it apart I'd listen with a mechanics stethoscope to try and locate the noise |

Oh, if it has noise without load on the drive train (which I would call clutch in) but it goes away with load (which I would call clutch out), then it could very well just be a loose crank nut. It will have a bit of a 'ring' to it. |

Let it sit and idle in neutral, hands off, it rattles. Grab and squeeze the clutch...it stops. |

Hmmm. For loose crank nut, you would have to put it in gear, and let off the clutch, then it would stop the rattle / gonging. Good news could be something simple with the ball and ramp assembly, or even cable (too much play, broken stay, whatever). Bad news could be 5th gear drive assembly. But that would be unusual to loose on an XB. Is the seal over on the secondary drive front sprocket OK? Any oil drooling? |

Sounds like the clutch throw out bearing. Pretty easy to replace I think. Pull the clutch and the the bearing pushes against the clutch spring. I think all you need is to remove the primary cover, remove the circlip in the hub. You may possibly be able to get it out via the derby cover. |

Take two aspirin and call me in the morning. I sounds like you have arthritis in your left hand!

Maybe broke ramp ears? Maybe you could find a good mechanic to look at it? (insert sarcastic smiley face here) :0 .... |

Joe, I've always have the belief that if it's not broke, don't try to fix it! Just saying. |

Problem is I know too many Marines. If it ain't broke, fix it till it is. I'm gonna do a comprehensive 30k on it, just polling the crowd to see if there were areas I should pay special attention to. I was thinking gearbox (why did they nix the trapdoor?) So I guess I'll pull the belt and check the 5th gear shaft play while its on the lift. |

Rat- Had that exact same noise, same condition. Couple of bearings in there got smoked when water entered the primary and turned the lube into grey goo. Got a used, complete clutch from a badwebber and replaced it. Noise has been gone for many thousands of miles. Do not let it go too long, the rattling will wear out the splines on the shaft. |

As a side note, I did that replacement twice before I got it right. The first time was to disassemble the clutch and replace parts. No good, as I missed the problem bearing and the rattling came back. It was much easier just to swap in a known good clutch. |

It does sound bearing-ish...every once in a while, instead of a rattle, I hear more of a "whizzzz" spinning noise then it goes back to rattling. Thanks for the tip. I'll add that to my "when the primary cover is off" checklist (at 30k, I'm going to check the chain shoe anyway). |

Had a grenade plate go in road king. Not much noise to it. After a job interview, and couldn't get clutch to release, embarassing, giving a huge push, jumping on, cramming in gear and getting on freeway home. Bear pulling that clutch apart as it was spreading itself apart allready. Got a used one from dunc's , put it in , and never looked back. Only one ever had trouble with. |
