I just replaced my primary gasket with a new one and it is seeping out oil more than the old one ever did. I followed the order of tightening the bolts as in the service manual. Is there a hi temp sealant I can use to add to the primary casing to seal the gasket? |

you shouldn't have to use any RTV. I've gotten away without replacing the casket when I pulled the cover off for a clutch job. others have too. me thinks that you did torqued everything right, but that there may be something you missed since it was leaking before, and is still. did you notice any RTV on the old gasket? did you THOROUGHLY clean the gasket surfaces? inspect for flaws/cracks/gouges? even if there was not enough time to do it right the first time, I always seem to make enough time to do it right the second time around |

I don't use gaskets, I just put high temp RTV on it and run the bolts hand tight, wait a half hour, then torque them, never leaks. |

Before it was leaking from the primary gasket it was leaking at the starter motor gasket which was replaced however I now believe it to be the stator plug grommet, so I added rtv to the grommet to seal up and passage for oil to escape. There was no rtv on the old gasket and I used a clean dry cloth to clean the gasket surfaces. |

New metal gasket? Or old paper gasket? Those old paper ones had about a 50/50 chance of sealing, even when brand new and installed correctly. The metal ones seem to do much better, even when reused. |

I did not know had a choice, I just ordered the one from hd. I suspect I must not have cleaned the surface 100% from oil. I have put the gasket back on with a layer of permatex red hi temp rtv sealant on the primary and the casing, let it get tacky for half an hour, hand tightened the bolts, waited an hour and then properly tightened them. Tonight Ill fill it with oil and see. |

I don't think there was ever a paper gasket for XBs. Tubers yes...but not XB. |

Makes sense. I didn't know if James or somebody else was making paper XB style primary covers. With the factory metal gaskets, I never had any problem getting them to seal, even reusing them and without any goop. I've been using the form-a-gasket stuff on the dirtbikes lately, just because I'm sick of running out to get or order the paper ones, and have had good luck. On the Buell I try and use the real gaskets. |
