Ran my heat soaked 08 to the store with half helmet and no ear plugs. There is an engine noise that sounds like an old gear drive cam V8 chevy. Waiting for it to cool to check the primary chain but I do regular maintenance and this should not be an issue. Any ideas? I most always wear ear plugs and full helmet so this may not be a new noise. Sounds like the primary chain may be too tight. |

That was my first thought. Realized most of the younger guys do not know what a gear drive cam sounds like. Medium to high pitch whine that tracks rpms. Chain is in spec. Seemed to come from right side. Oil pump? |

Just did a static run in the garage and could not duplicate. Ear plugs and full face and run it till it drops. |

If it's coming from the right side then it is gear noise, that's what's driving your camshafts. What's on your noggin can make a big difference, too. Even if I just flip the face shield up to move the bike around things sound different. Might still be worth doing a visual once over. |

I ride 3 different bikes and it is almost scary to hear the noises unmuffled. |

I have a 3/4 helmet that will do that 'new noise' thing to me to. It's 3/4 shield acts like a dish to grab sound. The bike sounds like a dryer full of marbles with that helmet on. I went back to my full face with ear pads and the bike sounded fine! |

Earplugs are no doubt better at damping some sound frequencies than others. I think this results in some engine noises seeming disproportionately loud when you're riding. Of course, sometimes the noises you think you hear DO turn out to be real and REALLY bad. DAMHIK |
