The stock muffler arrived today and I ordered all the necessary mounting hardware from American Sportbike-should have it next Wednesday. I also checked and found that the cable for the exhaust valve is there. I assume the default position for the valve is closed, right? Can it be wired open with the cable installed or will it end up flopping out? I find this bike a pain to work on compared to all my in-line 4s and I just want to mount/connect things one time and put it all back together again. If it doesn't run well with the ECM programmed as is I will bite the bullet and ship it back to Buell, I guess.

Just out of curiosity, if the valve is really just for noise control at low rpm, what would happen if the valve was closed all the time?

If you're running the race ecm then I would wire the muffler open. I lightly crimped an electrical eyelet around the top of the cable and connected it to the furthest mounting screw for the actuator. I then adjusted the cable so it was fully open. I did this as a temporary fix until I got a new actuator. Later I found out that the valve is closed 90 percent of the time and just opens when you're in race mode with the throttle! With your ecm, having it open will work better and the sound is really nice yet not loud at all!

Thanks. I will give that a shot.

The valve is NOT for noise control. It changes the tuned length of the exhaust path to optimize low and midrange torque as well as high rpm horsepower.

If his EBR ECM was set up for a Jardine then it will work better with an open stock muffler than with a closed one. I would run the open stock muffler till Winter and then maybe send the ECM back to be programmed for the stock muffler, at which time you can hook it back up to the actuator.
If it runs fine with the open muffler then I'd probably just leave it alone!

Just picked up the bike from HD...I figured I would be money ahead paying someone to do the work since I have neither time nor patience...amazetron! The stock can is whisper quiet at idle and up to 3 grand, has some bark to it at 4k but still not as loud as the Jardine. Best of all the surge at constant throttle between 2 and 3k seems to be gone, although on the highway I didn't get to spend any time to speak of at 2-2.5k. I asked them to wire the valve open and assume it was done. I haven't had it over 4.5k yet so I don't know if there is a flat spot anywhere yet, but there is nothing below that. I am so pleased...guess I'll keep the beast now instead of going for the Hyperstrada (which I can't afford anyway...)

I don't spend much time below 2.5k. I usually ride at 3-3.5. Under that, it shakes everything too much.

Thought that was normal. Is it not?

Shaking is normal, and it's lots worse at idle than above 2 grand, but mine was like a lean surge at constant throttle-jerky, not shakey.
