Anyone know offhand the size of the bolts that hold the kickstand to the engine case? I thought the Uly felt lighter during the ride to work...lol |

Can't remember off hand. At a friends but will let you know tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it. I would upgrade to grade 8 bolts. That's what I did when mine snapped. |

It was a grade 8. I changed years ago. It looks severely corroded, all the way through. I'm thinking its not a tensile issue but a material / corrosion issue. |

Rat, we done this before.... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/370519.html Rat, Here's what I did before the recall was announced. Parts: (2)Bolts, 1 1/2" Allen head alloy steel 5/16x18(black) (4)Washer flat, grade 8 (2)Washer lock, grade 8 Assemble two sets of bolts with 1 lock washer followed by two flat washers. Place a drop of clean engine oil on the bolt threads and the washer stack. Assemble and torque to 27lbs/ft.} |

Yep! That was when I installed this grade 8 set. Pre-accident, too. The jeep I was working on sat disassembled while I was in the hospital recovering. I put it back together still wearing a torso brace for my broken ribs and cracked vertebrae...about three months later. Kinda creepy going back to that particular spot in time.... Anyhoo. How's your fix holding up? What sort of miles do you log on the bike? I'll try to get a pic of my busted bolt-head when I get home... |

Ratbuell Posted on Friday, May 17, 2013 How's your fix holding up? What sort of miles do you log on the bike? It held until California Buell (Harley/Davidson) completed the recall. Knock on wood; I have not touched them in 5 years. My bike has close to 30k; all pleasure/entertainment miles. |

Sounds like my mileage and use. I grabbed a couple Gr5 at work yesterday to get it going again. I'll search around for some alloy steel bolts; I still suspect my issue is corrosion. The (now MIA) broken piece was not bent or malformed at all...just...rotted. |

There is nothing wrong with the bolts supplied by Buell. Though never admitted by Buell. The likely problem with the original bolts was the shelf life had expired, on dry thread lube/lock . What happens is the thread friction goes up, giving a "green" torque value. But the clamping force is reduced allowing the parts to move about, ending in catastrophic failure. Which was cause for the recall. I saw this type of fault from time to time at work. |
