Gonna do the seals on the Uly this weekend, anyone got suggestions on oil type/level. Really interested in how much to put in and what type is best if anyone could help, that would be greatly appreciated! Josh | ||

Check the dust seals first. Remove the mud guard and with a thin film of plastic see if it will go EASY under the dust seal. If it does then that may be the problem and no need to replace the oil seals. | ||

manual calls for harley typeE I used yamaha 10W oil level on 06 with stock springs is 113-mm below top of slider I use a zip ty to measure.  | ||

Well that sounds like a good temp fix, but since the seals are so cheap I thought I would go ahead and replace them, I only have an FSM for the lightning, since the ULY has longer forks I figured the total capacity might be different, just wanted to know the capacity and if anyone had a specific type of oil they like best. | ||

Pretty sure I used 18 oz per side when I did my fork seals and oil change. | ||

FYI, fork oil weights aren't like motor oil. When you change brands the weights don't mean anything. You're comparing apples to oranges. If you do some research you will find that one group says Harley type E is a 10 wt. and the next one will say 5 wt. Amsoil states that Showa forks run 5 wt. but don't say who's 5 wt. I just put Amsoil 5 wt. in mine and it is much improved for normal street riding. It actually soaks up the bumps now instead of jarring my wrist. I'm just saying, if you use something other than Harley type E then do some research on it and see were it really stands in comparison. | ||

The "film" test on the dust seal is to prove the seal is worn as if you can get the film under it easy it is toast. The "other" use for the film is to clean away the dirt under the "oil" seal. My right hand dust seal failed allowing dirt to get under the oil seal. After some testing to prove this was the fault I fitted Kriega gatters and they have been perfect and not leaked since then. The whole thing takes about half an hour to do and is VERY easy. I think it is a good idea to fit these anyway even after a fork re-build. | ||

Well I went ahead and replaced the seal anyways, with the help of a how to video, I was able to complete the task in under an hour. Thanks guys for the help! | ||

Tootal, I am not disagreeing with what you say about fork oil weights but the Amsoil Website states that their 10 Wt Shock Therapy Fluid is used to replace Harley Type E: http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/other-produc ts/suspension-fluid/shock-therapy-suspension-fluid -10-medium/ Thanks. | ||

Motorbike, there's no argument here, just wanted to point out how fork oil wt. is not consistent brand to brand like motor oil is. Amsoil does say their 10wt. replaces type E and type B Harley oil. That confuses me. On the same page they say that Showa forks use 5 wt.! Harley's forks are made by Showa. Hmmmmm. So my point is that fork oil choices can be confusing and a little research is not a bad idea, that's all. | ||

Thanks Tootal, I agree, research is good. I'm thinking I will change my fork oil next winter and would like to use Amsoil. They only have medium(10 Wt) and light(5 Wt) weights. I know my service manual recommends H-D type E for my 08 XT but I'm not sure what H-D type B is. Do you know? Is it lighter than type E? I agree, it IS kind of strange that the Amsoil 10 Wt is recommended to replace two types of H-D oil. Thanks! |
