So- After removing the shock to replace the O2 sensor and fan(not too bad, actually), I figured the shock could use some love. Short of having it rebuilt(54k on the old girl now), I was looking for the threads to replace the preload fluid. Alas, it seems all the old links with step by step pics are no longer active. Can anyone explain this to a dunderhead such as myself and/or dig up the links? Love your guts... |

If you have the shock and adjuster off the bike, it's easy. Here's how I did it: First, make sure you have a few ounces (ml) of fork oil on hand. Back off of the pre-load adjuster completely (fully counter-clockwise). Disconnect the hose that goes from the adjuster to the shock at the adjuster end. Lay the shock with the hose pointed upward so that none of the oil runs out of the assembly. Now, hold the adjuster vertically so that the hole where the hose connects is on top. Take a small screwdriver or something like a toothpick that will fit through the hole and push downward to push the piston to the bottom of its travel. Fill the adjuster with fork oil. Carefully reconnect the hose to the adjuster but don't fully tighten the connection yet. Turn the handle on the adjuster just a little to force any air out of the system. Once you see a little oil at the connection, fully tighten the hose connection. Now that you've serviced it, when you reinstall the shock you'll find that you'll almost immediately start to feel resistance when you crank the pre-load adjuster. |

If you got the thing off I would have it rebuilt. At 54k it will not be at its best. That or put on a low mile used unit. You should change the fork oil and brake fluids as well. |
