Anyone here completed a SS1k or any other IBA's before on their Ulys? I've completed a SS1k on an Older Concours before and it was pretty easy, Im thinking a group of us is going to do a Bun Burner (1500 miles in 36 hours) this year and I'll either use my uly, or try to use the NInja 250 . What have you done for long distance rides? I use the stock shield, and am happy with it, the wind buffeting doesnt bother me. I would like to have some highway pegs of some sort, does anyone make any? |

I use the passenger pegs for highway pegs. I also have a cheap gel pad from wally world. I put it on for a tank of fuel, take it off for the next, back on for the one after that and so on. Changes the pressure points enough to fight painful numbness. |

Rat, I do the same, although I have never been able to find the elusive "walmart" gel pad. A fellow rider has one and it is very comfortable. I use an alaskan sheepskin or a regular gel pad. I've tried an airhawk and dont really like them. What do you mean by passenger pegs for highway pegs? Do you throw your feet back there on them just to change the bend in your knees? |

Yep, I kick my feet back. Rotates the (titanium) legs, pivots the hips (one of them is metal too), flexes the spine and shoulders and changes everything up nicely for variety. I've also stood on the rider pegs for more than a mile at a time to fight stiffness, as well as just letting my legs hang free. Wind sweeps my feet back enough that I don't drag boots. The Walmart seat pad is back with camping, trailering, and automotive. They stick em with ATV accessories. |

I done an unofficial SS1000 with no problems on both a stock XB12XT and a stock 1125R. If you haven't yet, do some other distance riding to figure out what issues you may need to address. If you really want highway pegs, Palmer Products makes a set of brackets that let you add some. http://s410372035.initial-website.co.uk/accessorie s/select-bike/buell-xb12x-xt/ (Half way down) |

Thanks Froggy, I have seen those before and forgot Also what are you all using for a cruise control? Crampbuster? I've ran a vista cruise on a lot of other MC's and will probably get 1 of them. |

Cruise control? Do I look like some kind of old man? If I do use anything, it is a thick heavy duty O-ring that I can jam between the grip and aftermarket (HVMP) barends. Quick flick to enable it or disengage it, still able to adjust the throttle manually as needed. I typically use it for when I need my right hand to take photos. |

I did the Lake Michigan 1000 on the Uly. I found keeping two bottles of water or Gatorade with the squirt top in the tank bag make it more pleasant. Just drinking water at every stop dosent cut it. Oh yea, and the throttle lock got lots of use |

Yes, did it around California to Nevada and back. Left about 6:30am and returned around 3:40am. Pretty doable without rushing. Getting the signatures was a bit of a pain though. |

Our new department chairman (yes, I'm retired, but...) does that style of riding. Never could figure it out myself... Regarding cruise control on the Uly: I simply "disconnected" the return spring down at the throttle body...works great! The engine vibration (yeah, I know there's not that much) is sufficient to return the throttle if you release it. I have small hands, and it really helped my comfort on long rides. --Doc |

These case protectors from 5-0dro are another alternative for highway pegs, to some degree... Would not market them as such, but they proved a decent option to give the legs a break on some of my longer trips. . .
Word of caution as they are very close to the header. No association with 5-0dro, just a satisfied customer. |

i use the buell tank bag and love it. Its massive and even is expandable. its a clip in style that attaches to factory bolt locations and you just clip it in or out as needed and for fueling sorta like this but older!! http://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.badw eatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/292350.jpg&i mgrefurl=http://badweatherbikers.com/buell/message s/32777/292348.html?1184894007&h=290&w=290&sz=18&t bnid=aQH_nKRYRrl1fM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=90&zoom=1&usg=__ pULeFZozOPD3B19a8z0_DmiXFLM=&docid=UGUI0_cayv9kUM& sa=X&ei=p1RGUZjkEpTC4AOfpoCoDw&ved=0CE8Q9QEwAw&dur =577 |

On a hot day, one of those $10 walmart beaded "taxi driver" seat things works like magic. Wind gets all up under you. When you get near where you're going, you can take it off and hide it so no one can see you with it |

Put a Camelbak bladder in the tankbag and clip the bite-valve where you can reach it. In hot weather wash your face at fuel stops so the dried sweat residue (salt) won't blow into your eyes. Hook the back of your knees over the tank pucks with your feet sticking out by the turn-signals for another change of position. The tall seat is the way to go IMO, the short seat gets heat soaked from the rear cylinder and will really burn your buns... I completed a saddlesore during a run out to CO from my home in North East MD. On the Uly it was easy. I wasn't sore at all...I felt like I'd cheated... |

I recently did 920 miles in one day on my Uly. Not too bad for a 52 year old man. That was a one day mileage record on a motorcycle for me. The key is to change positions frequently (standing, passenger pegs, etc. as mentioned above) even sliding your butt forward and backward on the seat changes your posture and where your hind end makes contact with the seat. I also recommend use some type of throttle lock, it makes for a more relaxed ride and your wrists will thank you after a long trip. |

I've done the saddle sore and bun burner on my '07 Uly. Highly recommend the airhawk seat, buell tank bag was a must for holding the log and gas receipts and granola bars and ipod. I wrap my legs around the tank, I stand up, lay down on the tank bag, lean back against the backpack, hang my legs straight down, whatever needed to be done! |

I am a bit older than DJohn...did several 1000+ rides on the XT and one on the X. Did one with absolutely ZERO freeway/interstate, just to do it. 1019 miles in 18:37, so we made decent time too. Fat O-Ring cruise control from NAPA...guy gave me a couple, so how about the price? Tank bag? Any strap bag works ok. You might have to fiddle with the front strap(s) but I have three different ones I use, in different sizes depending on distance and weather. Put some small eye bolts in for the two front airbox cover screws...one of the bags straps on there, but most folks like something that looks more "store-bought". Whatever. Works great, uses stuff already in the garage. You guys with your legs all over the place...should I laugh or be nervous for you? Moving around is good, but staying off the highway will take care of a lot of that. I like hands and arms on the controls myself. Three minute stretching routine at each fuel stop that really works. I like some big mile rides! |

I have an AirHawk also. The trick to it is to find that under inflated sweet spot. Just enough air to make your ass hang above the seat is what is best for me. It insulates the seat heat and lets your butt have a fresh spot. I usually break mine out at about 300 miles. I move all over the seat. Sometimes I slide back as far as I can reach and dangle my legs in front of the side bags. This works until the pressure on my hands becomes too much. I agree with Datsaxman, you can do long trips on non Interstates without that droning, boring, drabness that it can become. Having some corners will keep you more alert. When I was doing this frequently, at gas stops I would stretch a bit, and speed walk or jog a bit to get the heart pumping. How do you guys get snacks and drinks into your pie hole with a full face helmet on while riding? I have the Buell camel back pack, that is great in summer to fill with water and ice, keeps your back cool, especially when the bottom fitting breaks off and you get your ass douched by ice water. |

I have never done a thousand miles in a day but on long runs I move about a lot on the stock 06 seat, which I is the most comfortable seat I have experienced. |

I wanted to chime in and just post a link to my Blog site. I use a 06 Uly as my IBA Rally bike I have done Many SS1k's and a BBG on the Uly. Carlstwowheeledadventures.blogspot.com I hope the posting about the odie's heat blankets gets resolved. I was planning on ordering a blanket soon. From my experience you only need it if you are running in 90 degree + temps and rain . I found that water gets in the seat and the engine heat will steam your butt, |

Can't you just order the Buell blanket from American Sport Bike? |

I just read Beast in the East writeup, Carl. Outstanding rally adventure to be sure. I did the Utah 1088 (three day version) in June, 2011. My first multi-day bonus rally, and it was F. U. N. http://utah1088.com/# http://utah1088.com/2011%20Corrected%20Mileage%20S heet1.pdf Yes, Matt Watkins did over 1500 miles each day! I wasn't sure how that third day would look from inside the helmet, so I went for a more conservative course. And skipped the last two bonus stops so I would be sure to arrive ahead of the cutoff time. At the 1088, there is no "late penalty" schedule. Late riders are DNF. Period. What a great time!! i am going to do this one next...it is hard to get out of town for such a long event, which is the only reason I will miss this year's 3 day 1088. http://utah1088.com/2014%2010n10%20entry.pdf saxman |

Saxman, Did you do the 1088 on a Buell ? Here on the East coast I am one of the few guys LD riding a Buell. I also was looking at next years 10in10. The format works real good for me. I also am suffering from the time money continuum . looks like no rallies this season for me and maybe a Bun Burner for my only LD ride. |
