are the problems with wheel bearing across the board on all xb's? or is it just Uly related, and if so is it all models of Uly? I have a 09 xt and need tires, was thinking of getting the new three bearing wheel to go along with the new tires.Ideas?

The issue affects all 03-09 XB and 1125 models.

If you do a lot of touring or long distance riding, I do recommend the 2010 wheel. If you don't venture far from home it is harder to justify the cost, but if you travel a lot it sure sucks to have the bearings fail 900 miles away from home.

It seems to be a little worse on the Uly, perhaps because of the longer travel suspension. Or maybe the Uly isn't any worse, but gets ridden more, so it reports more problems. Or maybe its just my imagination.

I keep my eyes on mine, and pack extra bearings and a spacer on any long road trips.

The uly sees it more because with the big bags and the comfy passenger seat its much more easily overloaded.

I also never felt my XB9 rear suspension bind up over bumps. But I have felt my Uly suspension bind up. Then I drilled out the holes in the tensioner slightly, and I have not felt it since. So I think there are some tolerance stack geometry stack up problems lingering here or there as well.

Well, there IS an alternative. You can buy a spare pair of bearings and carry them with you. Then if you crap out in the middle of nowhere, any bike shop can replace them. My local bikemonger charges me $40 to do so, and he can't even spell Buell.

I just opened up a package from Al at American Sport Bike. #17170 Wheel Bearings, XB Rear Wheel, 1 pair (E0005.02A8B). I'll be putting them in the wheel I'm using this summer.
If you carry spare bearings, also get the aluminum spacer to carry with them.

Just put my new 2010 rear wheel (from American Sport Bike) on my '06 yesterday.
Noticeably more resistance when rolling it around in garage or especially on a stand spinning rear wheel.
This was after finding that my 2nd set of rear wheel bearings were starting to go (SKF's that I replaced the stockers with, total miles 29K on bike).
And I never ride overloaded, and never pressure wash. Just me 99% of the time, and I only weigh 175lbs and seldom pack the bags full/heavy.
I like that the '10 wheel has external seals, like a dirt bike would. My original bearings had rust in them when removed.

Put the 2010 wheel on my 09XT after second bearing failure (at 47k miles) scored the bearing seat on the original wheel. Pretty sure that was my fault due to slight issue during install. Anyway, 2010 wheel is working great so far, 60k miles. I just purchased a 2008 XB12s Lightning and was wondering the same thing, should I watch and maintain the rear wheel bearings as much as I do on the Uly?
