I've read most of the posts and I still am not sure. If this topic has been visited in the last year I apologize. So I am wondering a few things: 1. is a 150/70/17 rear going to fit on a 2009 Uly rim where a 180/55/17 fits without changing the handling an appreciable amount? 2. are there any other tire options that handle some off-road that people here have run successfully? I like the look of the Shinko 705. If it will in fact fit, are they even safe? And is $163 for a front and rear reasonable? { |

I put a 170 D205 on my Uly (emergency) and it was somewhere between "terrifying" and "impossible" on turn in. A 190 probably wouldn't be that bad, but I wouldn't go narrower. |

That's unsettling. I never would have guessed 3cm width would have that affect. Do you mean it felt tippy at lower speeds when turning? |

Its about mixing the profiles and how the rim distorts the tire more than just the 3mm. You would crank on the bars, it would lean a little, then crank harder, and lean a little more, then crank harder, and FLOP it would slam over. You would overcorrect back, then start over again... basically going through the corner like a drunk weeble. It wasn't pretty. I rode 500 miles like that, including through the mountains, and did OK. But it wasn't fun even going in a straight line. The tire I had was also worn and flatspotted by another bike, so maybe it was worse than normal, but it showed that it can make a huge difference even though it "looks OK". |

Thanks for the heads up! I realize the curve of the rear tire will tend to flatten out when stretched from a 4.5 to a 5.5 rim width. And if you added a tire with a flat spot to that equation, I guess I'm not surprised you were battling to get the bike to lean predictably. Kinda like riding one of those mini bikes with the square rear tire profile.. makes me feel like I don't know how to ride anything but weeble style. |

TKC 80s for me they now make them in our size and are excellent both on and wicked off road a bit pricey though so far worth every penny (Message edited by jetranger_2000 on March 07, 2013) |

Jet, How many miles on your TKC 80s, so far. I'm curious how far a set will go.? |

I thought about the TKC80. But I do spend a majority of miles getting to destinations on the slab. I hear they vibrate a bit. Do you personally think they are noisy? |

I'll second Reep's warning on running a 170 on the rear... That was my used tire we spooned on (which had taken me across half the US), and it was not a pretty sight to watch him plod through the turns. There's a lot more to tire sizing/shape than just the width... |

Duly noted. I appreciate the feedback. The sizing issue puts me into a different set of options. All of which appear to be not as well suited for off-road use. I want a tire that has large enough gaps between the tread to "clear" in a muddy situation instead of turning to a slick. And the flip side to that is that I want a tire with an almost continuous center tread so that on-road noise and vibration is minimal. haha asking a lot I know. |

hum yes vibrate No they are nice and "solid" feeling i actually think they feel better than the scorpion sync so far. I dont have a ton of miles on them so far but so far I do love them. BMW put them on some of their bikes stock so they must be good!!! |
