09 XB12X. I have the funds from selling some items on Ebay. Should I get the EBR ECM for the stock bike? Get the 9 gearing from American Sport Bike? I have only enough for one right now. Which would you get first? tanks for your time.

I got an ECM back in '10, for my '06.

Love it.

Stock gearing.

If it runs great and you desire the gearing for your needs I would lean towards gearing it first.

If you have a running issue do the ECM first.

I will eventually be getting both. The bike surges at low rpm 3000 -4000. ecm possible fix. But also prefer the city-x gearing for spirited mountain riding. No apocalypse please.

Year makes a huge difference. I know on my 07 there is not a lot to be gained with the EBR ECM. But on some of the newer bikes, there is a ton to be gained. I don't know which are which.

I have the 9 gearing sitting in a box out in the garage waiting to go in... it's on my "todo" list.

Hello little pretend friends in my computer: I am curious about Reep's comment on the EBR ECM. I went from an 07 Uly to an 08, as you may recall I was a victim of FCS (Failed Crankshaft Syndrome) and the 08 does seem a bit more lethargic off the line than the 07 did. Anyone here want to comment on an 08 Uly that they upgraded the ECM from stock to EBR for, and the results?

My vote--XB9 gearing. I'm OK with the stock ECM, but someday I'll do the gear change.

How do you ride? Will you be doing a lot of slow, tight riding, or do you mainly ride on the street? Do you do much highway riding? If you do a lot of highway riding, you'll regret changing the gearing. If you like to ride single track off road, you'll want to change the gearing. If you want the bike to work better all around, get the EBR ECM.
If it were my bike, knowing how I ride, I'd go for the ECM.

Crusty, I rode across country and hung out in four corners area from New Jersey in 2008 on my City-X. I never really remember wanting another gear on those long stretches of 90+ mph. I rarely shift into fifth gear on the uly. I get surprised a lot of the time that I find I have an extra gear on the highway. That will not be an issue. But having that gearing for mountain rides of twisty goodness in the 25-55 mph range was awesome.

I have both.
I did the gear first and loved it.
Then EBR came out with the EBR Race ECM... had to have it.

Be very mindful of the second gear roll on wheelie

I have the EBR ECM and love it. Never tried the XB 9 gearing, so don't know how that is.

Have never found a need for different gearing on my Uly, so I would definitely go for the ECM.

I put the XB9 gearing in 20k miles ago - love it. A very kind BadWebber let me test drive his setup first and that sealed the deal. I did flash the ECM for the comfort kit, but my engine always ran pretty well so no need for a race ECM ... until recently. I ordered the EBR race ECM, K&N, a set of TKC80's, and a Drummer SS. Santa thinks I need to do some flat track'n.

I vote for the gearing. Have had both. The ECM smooths out the fueling, but the gearing gets you up and going NOW. Would never go back to the stock gearing.

Am I correct in assuming that with the XB9 gearing that at any given speed you'd be running at a higher RPM? How much higher?

I think it's 300-400 more. Actually puts you closer to being "on the cam" so when passing there is no lag, just point and shoot. Mileage difference was nil. Being closer to the sweet spot of the cam makes it more efficient yet the higher rpm cancels it back out so it stays the same. Now that's on my bike and that's just my theory.

What I have read is that it's 5th on the highway is like 4th was before the change.

I played with it deciding if I wanted to do it or not, and so long as I was below 85 MPH, it seemed fine. And I don't need the tickets, so that's fine with me.

I have an 09 XP. Replaced my ECM with the EBR unit about a year ago (cracked connectors but no performance problems). The engine is smoother and definitely runs much cooler but seat of the pants tells me the bike has more power with the original ECM. First and second gear roll on wheelies before the change and now, occasionally in first only. However, I bought the bike used so I don't know if the PO could have screwed with the original ECM. Think I'll put the original back in for a ride this weekend and see how it runs...

The bike runs well but seems to be less "beastly" with the EBR. Others may have a different experience.

I don't see myself spending hours on the slab over 80 mph so the taller gearing probably wouldn't matter to me. Driving in traffic and a little off road has me leaning toward the lower gearing.

From my experience, except for your surging issue, I would probably go with the gearing.

08XB12XT, stock to eBr ecm, cold starts much easier, stutter on taking off while cold is gone, smoother at lower rpms.

I vote for the ecm first. You may find that you don't need the lower gearing.

I got the ECM first for my 06. Even though now I think the PO had tweaked the OEM ECM cause this thing ran really good, and fast. It came with a K&N filter and jardine exhaust. Still glad I got it though. No more popping on decel. However, I'm taking my old rear wheel(upgraded to the 2010 wheel), slapping on a knobbie and putting a larger diameter chain sprocket on it. Then when I want to take it off road, I can quickly swap out the wheel, the front sprocket and away I go with lower gearing. Best of both worlds I think.

Interesting approach Uly Dude, chain conversion for lower gearing, return to belt for higher gearing, accomplished via spare wheel you already have.

It is. However it is not what I would call a "quick change" option. Its not something you would do going from a road ride to dirt because you would need to carry all the parts and tools. And if you did it from home, given all the costs, you may just as well have the right bike for the job anyway. Just me though.

Hey Tootal, I look forward to Buelltoberfest already. Love to see you and the gang again. Definitely thinking of more trail oriented rides - like last year. Much more relaxing than "waiting my turn" to pass on the pavement - or getting stuck in Helen. And no need for a workout. Heck, I was hoping my mods would allow me to keep up with you! Besides, I'm more interested in the beer to weight ratio at the evening campfire. It's a great place to catch up and compare notes regarding all these mods. There is nothing like real examples to compare.

IIRC without resorting to "search", the gearing change is 10 or 11%, so RPM would go up according to that %, in top gear for a given speed.
Puts it more in line with Tootal's numbers for highway speeds in 5th.
It's been great for me, and don't mind it at all on the occasional expressway trip. 80% or more of my mileage is off expressway, though, and in the mountains.

Well, I went and pulled the trigger with the EBR ECM programmed for the Drummer exhaust. I talked to Kevin and I will be sending out the can mid week for him to create his magic with the upgraded core wrap installed. I want to see if the surging/pulsing problem will disappear. Then maybe next year I will get the XB9 gearing. tanks for your time.
