Hey guys, I am getting a trouble code 36: fan short to ground or open.....We took everything off, and pulled the fan up to a 12v current and it ran just fine, so I replaced the head temp sensor....still having the problem..We looked around for ground shorts, but didnt see anything. Before I buy a fan, and it doesnt fix it, is there anything else I can check? I am at wits end right now.

I would be stumped to. When the CEL goes off, can you verify that the fan is even working at all? Like on shutdown, does it kick in when it usually does? The good news is, a flakey fan isn't the end of the world, but the bad news is you're still getting a code and it's not good for the bike if the fan isn't working. My knee jerk reaction is to check the ECM connectors, make sure those are not making contact with the seat. All it takes is a little flexing or worse a crack in those connectors to give you all sorts of whacky mysterious problems.

Remember that the ECU controls the fan by applying a connection to ground.
It's like opposite day.
My Dodge van's horn was connected like that too. Push the button an it applies ground to the horn. It used to like to honk over bumps.
Found a chafed wire against bare metal.

Perhaps a similar situation is happening on your bike?

no the fan is not coming on when the bike turns off (like it usually does). I will check the grounds......Is there a list in the service manual, or anywhere on here to where the most likely grounds would be located?

Yes.

The grounds can be found on the sub frame near the fuse box and attached to the front of the frame behind the headlight/instrument panel.
A voltage drop test between the negative battery post and the frame grounding connection. Can determine if there is a problem with the ground connection.
Or, you can just service the grounds...
Remove the battery.
Remove the ground "terminal ring" bolts.
Clean the surfaces of the terminal rings and frame, including threads.
Then reinstall ground terminal rings with light coating of grease on all contact surfaces.

I know of my fan having the same issue and when aplied direct electricity from a battery it worked, got a new fan and issue disappeared.

Thanks everyone I'll try to clean the negatives off, and thanks Pontlee for that info, I bought a fan on the bay today and will throw it in there and hopefully it goes away *crosses fingers*

ok, I took the buell to the shop, guy who works on buells said it was the ECM, it came off of a 03 XB and he cannot reflash it. Anyone know where I could get a ECM? Check the Bay and none on there.

Yes the 03 ECM will not work, that year was a different fuel injection system. You need one off a 04-07 XB12, or a 05-07 XB9.

What happened with the replacement fan you got?

the fans were ok, but what I dont understand is why the CEL just started coming on, I had the bike for a couple months before the issue arose. Thanks Froggy I'll start looking for those

Yes that will work, obviously you will need to flash the 06 XB12 programming or your own custom programming put on it, but you knew that already.

B57.. It is also wise and beneficial to tie the head, coil and sub-frame earth path (grounds) together with a separate, individual run.. the myriad ground path on these bikes leaves too much to question. I even tied-in the swingarm.(lower oil line clamp fastener) Best luck with your issue

Alright, see if this sounds like an ecm issue. when in ecm spy i can get the fan to work through diagnostic, but with it just running itll get to 120 C and i shut it off but the fan will not kick on.....Id this an ecm issue, anyone know? I'm at witts end here and it of options.

There have been a bunch of problems with the fan operating system on the '06's. Mine sure had it. My otherwise good original ECM randomly quit operating the fan. I replaced it with a known good ECM that had no problem on the bike it came from. My fan still did not operate as needed. I got a perpetual flashy light, and run/skip mode.

One fine 90F degree day I pulled off the interstate at the 55 mph I could obtain, and cut the fan wire from the ECM hooking it directly to ground. FAN ON. Bike ran fine from then on. I wired in a manual switch when I got home.

Other folks have proven a new ECM will work the fan, some have put in a new fan with good results.

I stuck with the manual switch. Three years now, it still works fine.

Digging up an old thread here.

I bought a used 2006 XB12ss. I recently discovered that with the engine off, bike on, kill switch on, if I move the handlebars the cooling fan will turn on/off, depending on the bar position.

If I move the main wiring loom behind the headlight around, it will cycle the fan as well. There must be a broken ground wire in there somewhere, I just have no idea which wire to check. None of them are visibly worn.

Any ideas?
