Hi Guys: My Ulysses XT is very damaged and fists and I think it's time to get new ones. Are heated. Do I have to buy the part number original new Buell? Or I can buy another and put them? The originals are expensive. Thanks in advance. |

You could switch to cartridge heaters. They are all I have ever used, and I originally chose them for durability... You don't move a wire every time you turn the throttle, they just stay in the bars. I suspect they take a while longer to come up to temp though (as they have to heat the whole bar). I'm working on and off on a thermostat controller for them... I have the next gen designed but haven't built the new prototype yet, nor tweaked the software for new feature (actually old features that I am bringing back). But you can just wire them up with a switch. Dennis Kirk sells them, search for "Polly Heaters". If you are using a thermostat or controller you can get the cheap two wire (one setting) "snowmobile" version. If you want to switch off / low / high you want the 3 wire "motorcycle version". $20 or $30 per pair... |

I'm using the "Polly" heaters on my 06 ULY. They are toasty. |

Hey Pontlee77. How are you? I think the POLARIS will be fine, but I want to use the original interruptor for connect. V's |

You can buy them direct from pollyheaters.com, or from amazon, or dennis kirk, or ebay, etc... |

I've been living with a dead high temp element on the RH grip for some time. Rather than replace the grips, or go with Oxford HotGrips (had them on my previous bike -- quite nice, btw), I'll be taking Reepicheep's advice and trying out the Polly inserts. I ordered the Polly PH200 (dual element high-low) inserts off of Amazon. ~$25 shipped. I intend to use the Buell heated grip switch to control them. I have the connectors from American Sports Bike: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17301-Conn.html I won't be tackling any of this for awhile, but when I do, I'll try to take pictures to share. I wondered if those factory grip heaters would be reliable, and suspected they wouldn't be... |

As I saw on mine, they are from Magura. I don't think it's an 'only Buell' thing. Maybe they would be made also for BMW ?????? |

I ordered the Buell switchgear (from Al) and wired my wrap on heated grip elements through those and a distribution block - wired via a relay a couple years ago. I imagine splicing in new elements or the Poly heaters under new grips would be pretty simple. Poly are supposed to be very warm, the self adhesive elements work well enough for me, but I'll add hand guard extension from Palmer eventually for the cold weather riding in the early Spring. Thaks a lot to everybody. With all this information should be enough this problem. I think I'll have to ask the Poly as they go. Also I will keep you informed of progress. V's |

Bill - The Buell heaters have been perfect for me. 2009 Uly came with them, my 08 1125R got them the first day in December 2007. I use them at some point almost every ride, no issues. 30k miles on the Uly, 28+k miles on Loretta. I made my own handguard extensions. Cost me nothing and took less than an hour to fab and mount.

So 1 person has a grip fail and it is "I wondered if those factory grip heaters would be reliable, and suspected they wouldn't be..."? Are there a bunch more failures reported or something? If you do go the stick on under-grip route (vs. the Buell molded in or the Polly's), then I would highly recommend spending a few bucks more for the Hi/Lo kind that do NOT need an in line resistor. The resistors can be a pain to find a good place for, and they get very hot in operation. I had to replace one of my stick on heaters (due to replacing the bars after a crash). I bought the resistor kind by accident. Work OK, but don't like having that resistor under the flyscreen. |

I put a set of the Polly heaters on my wifes bike 3 years ago and she loves them. Zero problems, cheap. They don't heat up as quick as my factory Uly grips. |

Grip heaters (long before Buell started putting them on bikes) were notorious for failing on motorcycles. First, grips wear out. A good grippy rubber will wear out after a couple of seasons of riding. So heat or not, grips wear out. Buell solved this by making the grips hard plastic, which does prevent wearing out, but at the cost of not having grippy grips. Which would make them a non starter for me, I like soft grippy grips (Al sells a really nice set). Secondly, every time you crack the throttle, you flex the wire going to the heater. So over times it fails, it just gets too much flex. The wire for a heater has to be a decent gauge as well, which aggravates the problem. A buddy at work has heated grips on his blackbird, and they fail pretty much every 18 months. Sounds like Buell did better. We don't hear much about them failing (which has suprised be based on what I have seen and heard with other brands). |
