I hate to keep asking questions filling up the board, but I couldnt find it in the knowledge vault.

My CEL would come on and off, the fan would not turn on, so I thought it was a bad fan. got the fan out yesterday and tested it straight to a battery and it turned.

Does the fan have power at all times when the key is switched on? Im wondering if I can test the other side of the plug to see if it is getting power.

If so, and it is all good, how would I diagnois a bad temp sensor?

The +12VDC through the yellow/brown wire comes from the COOLING FAN fuse (which is sourced from the BATTERY fuse).

The ground for the fan is controlled by the ECM.

Fan works without key switch.

yesss, thank you Garr, i just went out and test it.

So tell me if this is correct, the fan is powered on all the time, the Intake Air Temp sensor (IATS) is what tells the fan to turn on/off right? Trying to explain this to my father and hope Im telling him right. So in theory if the fan is working with a 12v source, then it is most likely the IATS.

IATS does not control the fan. There is a temp sensor on the rear cylinder head that sends temp info to the ECM; the ECM controls fan based on temperature and engine on/off. IIRC, there is 12V + to the fan at all times; the ECM controls it by providing (or not providing) a path to ground.

The CEL is a waste of time because it is a "common" light for faults. In other words you may have a problem some place else. You can do a "function test" on the fan with ECM-SPY or other which will test the fan runs ok. Easy as and no need to take the fan off the bike.

"how would I diagnois a bad temp sensor?". With a computer tool like ECM-SPY or TunerPro. Or just change it out and hope for the best. Not the best way of doing it though.
