I have finally decided to pull the trigger on Buelldualsport's 08 with a laundry list of farkles. I am on the fence about the hard bags-choices are Gobi vs OEM. As I understand it the Gobis are 37l vs 42l for the stock, but top open vs clam shell. I like the idea of top opening better as far as cramming stuff in, but have no experience with hard bags on a bike of either persuasion. Anyone have pros and cons for one vs the other? I don't know how much road tripping I will end up doing, and I don't think either set will be big enough to haul my scuba gear to the quarry, but I will be using the bike for commuting to work so will be carrying a laptop, soft side cooler, and gym gear for before work. I may use it for the occasional job site visit so I will be taking a hardhat and work boots unless I just wear them for the ride (boots, not hardhat, of course). Cost dif between the two is a c-note, so utility vs cost does figure into the equation. Thanks. |

"I don't think either set will be big enough to haul my scuba gear." Everything else will be ok but fins will not fit in the cases. I put everything in a Army bag and strap it to the seat. Easy as. "work boots unless I just wear them for the ride." DO NOT wear them to ride if they are "steel toe cap" boots. If a car runs over your foot it can cut your toes off. And something you do not need as it will take you many a Moon learning how to walk again. It is also hard on the fin pockets with diving. |

Surely to goodness you don't haul tanks on the bike... |

No I do not. For me it is, easy, cheaper and MUCH safer to hire them in on site. |

My used Uly came with OEM (optional Hepco Becker Journey) bags. They've worked good for me, but on this forum I've read several complaints about latches breaking (I treat them gently), and leaking in wet conditions (I don't do much wet weather riding). I don't know anything about Gobi's, but I think I'd be looking aftermarket, if my bike wasn't equipped when I bought it. |

I like bags that detach from the bike quickly and easily (like OEM). Again, I don't know about Gobi's |

I have a pair of Gobi's but I don't use them on the Uly. They came with my KTM 950 ADV I had in the mid-late 2000s. They look a whole lot better than the standard Buell bags and are top loaders. In my opinion that is. |

If you like function over form I'd go with the gobis. More h2o resistant then the journeys (important in scuba diving). They would also be tougher in a fall or tipover. The look is subjective however. Some like the adventure type look of the gobis, others the more refined look of the journeys. I have the juniors on mine which I like a lot. |

I have the Gobi's best bang for the buck you can find them on E-bay cheep sometimes. Mine are black KTM no big deal decal's fit over the KTM if you worry about that kind of thing. only con is I forget how wide I am with them on. Also I would swap my journey racks for the adventure racks journey racks set the cases right on the pass pegs and the adventure set the cases back a tad. No gripes no regrets I overload them and have had no issue with them. No water in my stuff at all. Top load keeps my crap frop spilling all over the road. I have the 37l big enough for me so far. Redtail, do the Gobi's render the passenger pegs unusable with the Journey racks? |

Kublak the Gobi's do not render the pass pegs unusable. The pegs just won't go to the upright position when stowed they are at a 45 degree angle when mounted on the Journeyman racks. no big deal for my kids when they are on back. I will try to load up a photo or two for you as soon as I figure out how to shrink my photos to 103 kb any help. (Message edited by Redtail on December 11, 2012) |

Thanks for the pics. I like the more durable design of the Gobi's over the stock bags, especially since mine have some short comings. I will email you a resizing link I've used. |

Thanks for the input. I have decided to go with the Gobis. I guess aerodynamics and Uly are sort of an oxymoron anyway... |

The KTM gobis are smaller than the normal Gobis. Normal ones, though not as prevalent on the used market, are like 42liters. Plus if you buy new, you can get them in black now. That's my plan. And they do snap right in just like the stockers. The only knock against the Gobis is the cost. |

Uly_dude what gobi side panniers are 42l The top case is 42l but I can't find gobi side cases bigger than 37l. 42l is huge. I found a pair of 37l KTM gobi side cases on e-bay new in box with 2 keys for less than $300 US + shipping. (Message edited by Redtail on December 13, 2012) |

The best thing about the journey bags is you can store a helmet in them. Works great for leaving the bike somewhere and your helmet is safe and dry. |

Gobis won't hold a full face helmet? |

There is a set of Gobis on ebay right now for $300. Someone please buy them so I can stop drooling over them.

Dmcutter, No the gobi side case won't hold a fullface helmet. Red450, You can find new gobi's for that price on e-bay sometimes or close. |

Yup, the stock top box will hold a full face helmet, at least my helmet. |

My stock Journey side cases hold a full face, as well as the top box, an XL Nolan modular. |

I stand corrected. I had it in my notes that the KTM gobis were smaller than normal gobis. Can't seem to find that anymore on the internet. |

I had Gobis on my DL650, I did not like them. All it takes is a sharp knife to cut into the soft plastic that is the hinge. They are double walled and that makes them heavy and the walls thick. I knocked one off trying, unsuccessfully, to avoid a large safety cone in the middle of an on-ramp. I missed a direct hit with my wheel, but didn't clear my Gobi and it "knocked it clean off" to paraphrase Dirty Harry. I like the Journeys much better and would buy the Executives if I could afford them. |
