Nice day, 50 degrees, already dark out, taking the parkway exit that's only a quarter mile from my house. Just start to lean into the turn and it's like the rear tire hits glare ice ( at 50 deg.???). Now I'm in the middle of a single lane exit ramp facing oncoming traffic, which luckily was light. Got the bike up and facing the right way without getting hit. Checked for leaks then started and rode it a couple hundred feet to the mini mart at the end where there's lighting. Bent the handlebars, broke the foot peg/brake lever off the casting, broke the rt. turn signal lens and generally scraped up a bunch of stuff including my knee. I think the saddlebags saved me from worse. Got cleaned up and went back to that curve. Looks like fresh (today) pavement markings along with piles of salt like crystals. It looks too fine for road salt so I think it's a fast dry compound that they put over the paint, just went a little heavy. Looks like Al has most of the parts but he doesn't have frame parts. Does anybody know any sources other than the dealer, if even they can get them? |

Those are probably glass beads that they put on the wet paint to make the paint reflective to headlights. Nasty stuff, you are effectively riding on a road covered with tiny marbles. It's on the list of things to watch for... when I smell fresh paint, raw diesel fuel, or burning rubber, I am in ***FULL*** pucker mode. Paint means slippery paint or the glass sand you found. Diesel is hard to see and a fresh spill might as well be ice. Hot rubber means a truck or trailer ahead might be close to launching chunks of tire (which is bad enough if you hit it, but will also cause other traffic to veer unpredictably and dangerously). That casting is a bit pricey... On the Uly, the pegs seem to survive, but that casting goes. ATGATT... Glad you came out OK. Those bags are pretty tough, aren't they!?!? |

Glad you came out of it so well, Griff, and I'm not minimizing the drop. Sorry about that. Painted markings on roads are always seen as a hazard to be very cautious of to me. I try to always cross them in an upright position though sometimes that is tough to plan for. Newly painted markings can be bike droppers for sure unless you cross them in the full upright position. Situations like you encountered, in the dark, are treacherous. You'll never see road markings in the same way going forward though, and that is a good thing. Best to ya', Griff. |

I dropped mine in the dark a couple months ago. Thought the kickstand was down and it wasn't. Had to replace left handguard and blinker. You should be able to get those parts at americansportbike.com and Buell Parts. |

Only ever break the front blinkers. Those swap out in about 2 minutes. The %$#@&%* rear ones require waaaaay too much effort to replace. If you've got racks and bags, call in sick and take the weekend off, send the family out to the store and let the phone go to voice mail. So I overstated it a little but only by about 7.3 minutes. It is an aggravating process nevertheless. Glad to hear you're OK and able to post here with us. I've logged your experience in that place that I file ride caveats. Glad to hear you walked away intact. If you can't get all the parts from Al, you may try contacting my local Buell dealer. New Castle Harley Davidson Buell, they're on Badweb as Nchdbuell. They've been posting Buell parts here that they've come across in old stock. 724-924-2310, great folks to deal with, lots of Buellers there. |

Bds, I have ridden through some farming areas and it's always an eye opener when you see a muddy trail across the road between two fields. Usually it's not mud! It seems pretty easy to find the common stuff like bars, levers, and lights. That damn casting that holds the foot pegs might be a problem. Only looked online though so far. Should probably hold comment until I talk with the dealer and have them check the network. If it comes up as backorder then I can start complaining. Anybody have an idea if it can be welded? I can tell you that after a couple of days, the knee is a hell of a lot more tender now than it was Monday night. Can't wait for the area to start to calm down some. Thanks for the support everyone. |

Aluminum, so it should be weldable, but you'd always see the repair. It'd be nice to find new or good used piece. |

Griff, I went over the handlebars last April and broke a bunch of stuff, some of it on the Uly. The parts I couldn't get from American Sport Bike, I sourced from Surdyke, www.surdyke.com. They shipped parts within a week and generally discounted from list price. They are a HD dealer in St. Louis area. Barry |

Finally called the dealer today, the casting is actually available from HD. Reep was right about pricey, $200 for a little piece of aluminum. The good news is that the dealer is running a Christmas sale of 15% of everything, might make that casting a little easier to swallow. Parts guy also said if I give him the VIN I have a better chance for a color match. Might still have a friend of mine try welding the old one for a spare. Just a bit nervous about the times I would stand up on the pegs. Hate to see the bike just sitting in the carport. Maybe if I get my order in I can have it road worthy before Christmas. I'll keep y'all posted. |

if you broke the point of mounting for the foot pegs, yes its weldable but it will always be ugly afterwards. i hope your first thought was buellsterparts.com, if they dont have it for cheap i am surprised. |
