While tinkering with my 08 XT yesterday, I decided to do a quick test of my starter clutch. I have noticed a couple times recently where it seemed like the starter made quite a racket while cranking after the bike was warmed up, as if the starter clutch was not holding a couple of times. I figured the best way to check the starter clutch was to disconnect the harness plug at the coil and crank it over about four times, with the plugs still in place for compression load. Immediately after I did this, I re-connected the coil and fired up the engine for a short while. After I did this, it occurred to me that fuel was being injected into the cylinders, which were not allowed to fire, and could possibly be running past the piston rings into the nice clean Amsoil that I just changed. I only cranked the engine four times for about five seconds each. Do I need to worry about the small amount of fuel that could have gotten into the oil or am I making a mountain out of a molehill? I am thinking that since I was cranking the bike with the plugs in place, there really would not be enough fuel being injected that it would even matter. On the other hand, I don't want to be responsible for damaging my own engine. Am I crazy or not? I don't want to waste $40 worth of oil and filter either. Thanks. I doubt that such a small amount of atomized fuel could do anything wrong. I suggest you take it for a ride and heat the oil up. Any unburnt gas would be boiled off. With injection, the fuel was most likely in such a fine mist that it was mostly pumped out the exhaust. | ||

Well it started right? That means the plugs were not fouled. That means it is likely never going to be the problem to the oil that you are worried about. A far worse thing to do is to start it letting it run it just a few minutes to not fully warm up. This is something that a lot of folks found to be a problem when they were new. Dealer sales guys would fire them up to let the potential customer hear it run. After five or ten cold start/rev cycles the plugs were wet. A lot of new bikes would not run right until the plugs were changed. | ||

Thanks guys. I admit that I just get a little paranoid sometimes. I just need to slow down a little and think before I do things. I suppose I could have just disconnected the fuel injectors and none of this would have been an issue. I tend to create a lot of my own problems with my OCD. Anyway, yes the bike fired right up and ran. I should just quit worrying and go out and ride the darn thing. Little cold right now in Minnesota though. Thanks! | ||

For future reference you can quickly and easily pull the fuel pump fuse instead. | ||

I would no worry any. As far as I can make of it - If you look after the bike like any other, feed it right (good fuel, rubber, fluids), treat it with the respect you would anyone or anything else and ride as it needs to be (it likes that) you should have few problems. |
