well as previously stated in one of my posts, my CEL came on with me and my girl riding 2 up. I just thought maybe it had something to do with the preload not being set for both of us,,,,but it isnt. Dad and I headed out this morning for a nice little ride to our local cycle gear. After we got there and turned out bikes off, it was quiet......to quiet. I said to myself. "Self, your fan isnt running." We checked the fuse, and it is good, and now I am coming to my loyal and trustworthy Buellians for help. I have read elsewhere that it is either the fan (duh!) or possibly the temp sensor. It seems the light will come on when speed reach excess of 65ish (which is quiet often), and around town it goes off and stays off, weird huh. |

Check the codes. If you do not have a dongle, a jumper wire can be made. Search here or look in the Repair Manual for instruction on which terminals to jump. Should be pretty easy to read the code. |

does anyone know how I can test the fan straight to battery? Will I need to use an inline fuse? |

Pretty sure the fan plug is on the left side. Test to see if it is getting 12v. Then you can just run some wire straight from the battery to see if it runs. |

Error code 36 is Fan Control Circuit (probably bad Fan) If you want to power the fan independent of the ECM, consider the following info. relative to my 08 XT: The fan has 2 connections on it, 1 for the + 12V which comes from an independently fused wire (10A)directly from the +12V bus. The second connection is to the ECM connector J2, lines 2&3 which the ECM internally switches to ground within the ECM to operate the fan. (Message edited by husky on October 26, 2012) |

If I was at the connector, I would just use the ground there....instead of running dead short current through the ecm ground path. I would also just replace the fan,AFTER I fixed any and all oil leaks. There's really no mystery here. The fan died, and the system is performing exactly as designed. Even if you revive it, its going to fail again in short order. Though I don't recommend it for long term, I put a 15 amp fuse in to get me home. Worked for about 50 miles. |
