Well went to start playing around with the Uly today by taking off the bags, wanted to repopulate some stuff under the tail that I used on the trip and install my tank bag. I shove my key in the triple tail and find it to already be depressed. O.K... no biggie, I try to pull the tail over and it is jammed. Took me about 10 minutes with a screw driver, some WD-40 and a dead-blow hammer. After wiggling around the screw driver head as much as possible on the inside and having some dirt break free. I sprayed some WD in there. She started to slide over but not far enough to change the position. I took the dead blow and held the screw driver in with my hip, pulled with my left and hit with my right... and hit my left hand with the dead blow... even though it is called a dead blow... it still hurts lol. Ended up actually hitting the tail afterwards and got it all the way over and rotated up. Now I no longer need to shove the key in there to get it over and up but luckily it is still spring loaded. Anyone else run into this issue? Is there a fix for it? Might have to move tools and paperwork out from under the seat if I can't reliably remove the seat. | ||

Yup, just take it apart and remove the stupid spring and button. Then it won't jam and you wont need your key to move it. | ||

Yep, I removed my key button years ago and siliconed the hole. Never looked back. Still need to spritz the uncoated aluminum teeth once in a while to lube them, but other than that it works flawlessly  | ||

When I bought Penny, my '09, last year the HD dealer in St. Louis didn't realize the tail even moved until I told him it was supposed to ... strangely though, it seemed to be locked in place. While I was processing the paperwork (I would have bought her regardless) they used WD40, elbow grease, and finally anti-seize and it worked just fine on my final inspection. The PO left her outside with no shelter at all for the first 2 years of her life and never moved the tail once. That was the least of my worries do to his TLC. I move the tail a few times / week now with no problems at all. I've thought about getting rid of the "lock" but haven't bothered because I always have a key on hand to use and it seems to work just fine now. | ||

I bought some awesome lube from the marine supply place, its kind of thick and blue, Super Lube or some crap. I'm a monster with that shit, I put it on everything that moves every couple months, hinges on everything, door locks, key holes, and I never have anything stuck or rusted. I use it monthly on all my trailers, on the hitches and anything that opens and closes so it doesn't get affected by the air in Florida, which can be corrosive. Just goo preventive maintenance that costs next to nothing. |
