I did the search thing and evidently I'm clueless with computers. I have a '09 XT and would like to change it to something similar to the "S" model. I just bought another bike with bags and would like to change the Uly to something sportier. If you can point me to what's involved and whether I'd save myself trouble by trading my XB12XT for a "S" model. Is it as simple as changing subframe? Thanks for the help. |

You should be able to convert it to an Ss or "Lightning Long" by swapping rear subframes, seats, footpeg brackets, and if you want, front fairing/instrument cluster assemblies. The Uly and the Ss use the same frame. Rather than going to all that trouble, you could just take off the luggage brackets and windshield (and if you want the triple tail/grab handle assembly), and have your seat re-worked by somebody like Sargent Seats to give it a sportier profile. |

I had this bookmarked in case I ever wanted to do something like that. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/667469.html?1331227601 Scroll down a bit to the post of Trojan to see the uly to SS conversion (Message edited by redhat on October 10, 2012) |

You don't need to swap the frame rail. The Uly are the same as the Long except it has a couple extra holes. You can just swap the tail light housing part and the underseat tray. You might have to do some fab if you want to save some money. The ECM & various wiring is in different places but thank can all be worked out. I am going the other way on my wifes SuperTT this winter, if I don't sell it. Maybe we should just trade bikes. Murf |

The trading bikes is the logical thing to happen thus it will be the last thing contemplated. |

I really appreciate the input from you riders. The biggest reason for me considering changing the XT is the bike has zero issues and sorted out. At the same time if I can find XB12 Lightning in comparable condition I would probably be ahead of the game to trade. 99% of my riding is solo and have another bike with bags for touring. Thanks again. |

I converted my uly to a Sslong, but kept the long suspension. I love it for the progressive springs, very comfortable. I used the uly sub-frames and fitted a S tailpiece. The extra holes in the rails I covered with badges. I fabbed up a new under-tray (actually the front half of a uly, and the rear of a Ss, so I could keep the battery, ECM and shock reservoir in the same place. The seat lock was a bit of a pain, but still uses the same brackets. If you want to fit the Ss foot-pegs it becomes a little more fiddly, but can be done.... The Ss fly-screen and brackets etc go straight on, (you may need a special torx-bit to remove the ignition switch)here's a pic
