Gday from NZ, ive ridden an xb9 for 4yrs and wont buy another road bike if its not a buell. Unfortunately there are not many Ulys here, so ive had to pay more for an 05 than many of you have for an 08! My main question is will the 2006 luggage racks fit on a 2005? I was thinking they only made 2006 onwards Uly bikes but could be wrong there. How does one tell? Also should i replace the rear wheel bearings immediately or look to swap the wheel out for later wheel? Cheers 4any help or suggestions, the bike is basically stock, tho i plan to race tune the ECU and swap my xb9 race exhaust. |

Congratulations on the Uly. The first year for the Ulysses (XB12X) was 2006, so you might want to try to figure out what year your Uly really is. At any rate, ALL models of Uly used the same factory luggage brackets, so any you find should be OK. |

I have a 2006 Uly and bearings are changed out twice only, 1 set in the front [24000km] and 1 set in the back[36000] From both front and back actually only 1 was broken, but changed it out as a set. The bearings of the idler wheel are next for my peace of mind[almost 60000km]. For the rest no troubles. |

For my 07 model year with the old bearings, I first just made sure they weren't obviously rusty and did not have obvious side to side play. Then I made sure the rear wheel always got installed with the exact "by the book" procedure and torque settings. Then I ordered new bearings and the spacer from Al at American Sportbike (still for the old style wheel). I keep them along any time I am on a road trip (along with an extra side bag latch and a spare belt). Still haven't put in the new ones. I'm getting close to 30k miles now, so I popped off the seals during my last tire change and repacked the bearings. This may have been a mistake, as my "off the shelf" grease is probably not the right water absorbant stuff that came from the bearings from the factory, but the stuff in there was getting sparse and stiff. If they show any sign of rust or side to side play, or make obvious crunching noises spinning the tire by hand, I'll replace them. The new style 3 bearing wheel gives peace of mind, but the old wheels can work fine also in a great many cases if you follow the rules installing the wheel and watch for impending failures. |

The build month and year is on the top right hand side of the headstock next to the VIN number. Good old fashioned Castrol Lithium grease is good enough for wheel bearings and always has been. Grease will "dry out" with time and heat and is not designed to "absorb water". The bikes is six years old now so I would check the bearings. You will only find it on the front with the wheel off the bike and I would remove the rear as well to make sure the axle is not stuck onto the spacer. In fact I would go through the whole bike to make sure all is well. You will have a hard time finding the stronger 2010 Uly rear wheel now. |

Wow, thanks guys! I went away for the weekend and came back to a lot of good info and plenty of my questions answered, CHEERS! Hughlysses, i know you are a heavyweight here, thanks for your input. Anyone is welcome to visit NZ, its absolutely MADE for the Buells (very windy twisty, unpopulated roads and gravel roads too with amazing views). Nallac and I will happily take you for a ride, right callan!! I'll go over the bike when I pick it up next month, plus its the first ive ever bought from a shop (at a private sale price), so im getting a 3month mechanical warranty and immediately doing a trip on it, so that should be great insurance. Uly_man and Reepicheep, ill check the VIN etc, as nallac did tell me they started in 06. Probably our 'DMV' here making a mistake when imported from Japan! Thanks also Petrus and Ratbuell for the info! |
