Hi Guys- been having issues with my trusty old Lawrence XOG gps, namely with power to it. It has been running flawlesly with Radioshack charger , and recently it startrd going on and off. The GPS runs perfectly fine in my truck. When the bike is at home it is plugged to a Battery Tender and shows 13.5 volts on charger ,12.5 volts unplugged, but the voltage at the accessory plug is only 8-9 volts.
Has anyone run into this issue before and if so how was it solved? I know that those outlets are controlled by the ECM , and in the past whenever I turned on the ignition key the GPS would come on. I have a new ECM installed correctly with the spacer and no visible sign of damage to it.and the bike runs great. So... where should I begin the troubleshooting?
Please chime in....

Ishai

Steering head / instrument panel ground.

How's the outlet under the seat? Same circuit...

On an '06 the outlets aren't controlled by the ECM so it is a pretty striaght-forward circuit.

I'm in agreement with Ratbuell on the Accessory socket ground wire -it is one of the group of 4 attached to the lower grounding point on the steering-head.

The wire can break internally and then arc and produce a resistive connection - give them a wriggle while measuring the outlet voltage.

Further investigation revealed 0 resistance between negative at rear accessory socket and frame bolt, 4 ohms between negative and frame at the dashboard outlet, so I guess you are right...I thought the accessory outlet were ecm controlled on all model years but could be wrong....
How much do I need to dissasemble in order to get clear access to the loom?

Thanks
Ishai

No worse than when you put in your Stebel or your HID's...usually it cracks where it makes the jump from left-side of frame onto the forks.

1. Remove the 6 allen head screws from the front flyscreen.
2. disconnect the horn and the headlight connectors.
3. remove the 2 screws holding the headlight bracket inside the front section.
4. remove the two screws holding the 'beak' to the lower triple clamp and remove the headlight & 'beak' as an assembly - that way you haven't altered the headlight tilt adjustment.
5. Go for it - the ground wires are completely visible at that point.

So I am scratching my head now...I fixed the broken earth wire under the cowl No voltage in both dash and rear accessory plugs, accessory fuse good, good ground in both outlets. So... next place to look?

Thanks

They are both powered via the AUX relay that gets the power via the AUX fuse so they would be the first places to check.

Is that with the motor running or just the key on?
ECM won't turn on the ACC ckt until system voltage is above a threshold level.
Check while engine is running.

Zac, that is true of the later models, but not the earlier ones. If Rays is a 2006, I think that circuit is on all the time.

Unless a fuse is blown. ; )

I want to say there is a Y junction in the ground wire in that area. Depending on where in the path your fix was needed...you may still have a break at the factory Y splice.

Ground is good now- there is 0 ohms between negative of both sockets and chasis.Fuse for aux sockets is good- tested.
There is no voltage at either socket with key on or park.
Battery is at 12.5 V with no Battery Tender and 13.5 with Battery Tender plugged in.

So, problem solved. It seems that as I was testing voltage from the sockets ,using a plug and bare wires, I must have shorted the hot lead to ground and blew the accessory fuse. I put in a new fuse and all is good so far. The good news is that I found the broken ground under the cowl and fixed it .Thanks to everybody who chimed in.
