.....and you can change a Uly belt on the side of the road OK, I may have cheated a little and didn't reinstall the belt guards, so I saved what...a minute and a half? All stock bike, 27k, snapped it on a hard 1-2 shift. Bike on sidestand the whole time, removed the swingarm bridge, loosened the footpeg mount, removed the tensioner wheel, loosened the rear axle so the wheel could slide forward some on the taper, and on she went. Used belt, pre-stretched. For the mental note file, put plenty of antiseize on the long bolt that holds the swingarm bridge in place. There's three shorts and one long; my long one had fur, the corrosion was so bad. The only thing the toolkit didn't have that I could have used, was a 3/8 box end, for the sidecase bracket bolt to the footpeg mount. I'll remedy that this weekend. 10mm was too big, so all I could do was pivot the bracket out a little bit. But that's probably my fault, I seem to remember I sourced nonstandard bolts for my bags, in GR8. And it was *only* 279% humidity while I was doing it!! wheeeeeeee!!!! |

Bike on sidestand the whole time... You didn't even have to find a honkin' big log or rock to lay it on...great! |

Didn't you have that thing laid on it's side after you left my place a year or so ago, near Bristol Tn? I thought that was a belt? Or was that one a flat tire? Damn, memory is failing. |

Laid on its side a couple years ago was a flat. I wouldn't have laid it on the bag, except the tire lost its bead so I had to unload it to get it to re-seat. The memory isn't that bad, Vern...you remembered it on its side, it was Bristol (but over the line in VA)...and I was on my way home from your place. 3/4 isn't bad, gramps! |

Yep it is not very hard to do. As long as you have a belt with you of course. A good tip is to remove and refit a belt at home first for practice. Anti-seize everything so you know it will come apart when needed on the road. The foot rest hanger bolts only need to be hand tight as it is easy to strip the alloy threads even with a torque wrench. A new belt is very stiff and the last version is MUCH stiffer. Carry a used one. People go on about keeping all sorts of parts for there bikes but a belt is "number one" in my experience. I have had two go? |
