I have some training to do in Texas and thought this would be the perfect opportunity for me to take my 06 Uly on a long run. This will be the first long trip for me and the Uly. I will be taking three days. I will be stopping in Tucson AZ, El Paso TX and then finally San Antonio, TX. Then back in the reverse order. Things I've done to get ready: Drive my car with the windows down to become used to the heat New rear wheel bearings New front brake pads Oil Change One of those cooling vests you soak in water. Things I'm bringing with me: General set of tools Spare Belt Flashlight Camel Pack Duct Tape Repair manual Extra 1 Gallon gas tank (filled) Then of course my clothes and shower/shave/tooth brush type items GPS Gortex top and bottom Anything else I should bring or be prepared for? |

Take a look at this motorcycle camping checklist. It has a lot of good ideas on there, most of which you won't need, but some that are critical: http://micapeak.com/checklists/mclist.html bb |

I would skip the fuel and carry paper maps as backup. Also have zip ties, and sanitary pads. |

Most importantly I'd make sure I have a Water, Water, Water.. I always have a couple gallons or so. Buy a water jug you can take tubing (used in refrigerator water supply and can buy at Lowes), buy a couple feet and place on end in jug, on other end put a bite valve like used on a camel back. Also fill up (fuel) in El Paso, next gas station is in Van Horn Texas. After that it's pretty good on I-10 to San Antonio |

I used to live in California City, I do not envy you, stay cool and drink lots of water! Have a safe ride! |

Plan on keeping the cool vest wet. It'll save your bacon. Needs to be soaked every couple of hours. And wear it under a proper jacket; It'll just dry out if you wear it under mesh. bb |

Ha, you can eat up some serious road between El Paso and San Antonio ... the speed limit is 80mph most of the way, you can get away with 85mph no problem. The wind generally will be at your back towards San Antonio, expect a strong head wind heading back. (They have wind farms out there, so you know there will be wind). If you get a chance while you are in San Antonio make sure you ride the Twisted Sisters (google it). |

Having done that route + in August, hydration is your biggest concern. I'd recommend Gatorade instead of water. You need to replace the electrolytes in your system. Looks like you got the rest covered. |

Well its all a mute point. Update! One of kickstand bolts sheered off in the case when it was loaded up in the drive way. So I took the car. I need a machinist now |

Moot point---and bolt should turn right out with a little persuasion with a drift. Seen alot of Uly's do this. |

Are there any home brew fixes for strengthening this apparent weakness? |

This was a problem for the '06 Uly. There was a service bulletin addressing the bolts, bracket, pivot and side stand. So there is no need for a "home brewed cure." |

Well, I don't know what the bulletin says about it. Could someone post a link, please? Both our bikes have lost their side stands, one an 06 & one an 07. What I did, in hopes of taking some of the stress off the bolts, was to weld a piece of 1/8th inch by about 1.5 inch piece of metal vertical along the outside edge of the bracket. In effect, making a 90 degree angle out of the bracket. My hope was that this would take some of the leverage off the two bolts. I'm not an engineer but it seemed like it should help to me. Murf2 |

My 2006 has the upgraded pivot, for sure, so hopefully the other pieces included in the S.B. are already implemented. I'll look it over one more time, and do a little searching for this tsb. |

Murf2, here you go: http://www.allworldauto.com/recalls/NHTSA_06V24500 0_2006_BUELL_XB12X_recall_61605.html Buell, to my knowledge, never divulged the root cause of the bolt failure. But, it was suspected (here) to be caused from an improper torque condition on the bolts. Possibly due to equipment, inspection or thread locking compound failure. The factory bolts are of the highest quality, thus, need not be improved upon. Look at the side stand pivot. If it has a nut on the pivot shaft. Your bike needs the recall done. Thanks Teeps! Mine has the pivot pin instead of the bolt. I don't see anything about the actual bracket, tho. Seems like I remember someone saying the later side stand assembly's were different. Do you know anything about this? Thanks again, Murf2 |

The updated bracket as 3 mounting holes. The '06 Uly only has 2 mount points in the engine case. I guess a guy could make a third stand off and have it welded to the engine case. Not something that I would do... |

Teeps, Is the extra bolt horizontal from the side or just another one going up from the bottom? Thanks, Murf |

So if it breaks like mine did I can just take it to the Harley dealer for repair? Thanks Barry |

Murf2, First I stand corrected on the configuration of the recall part. My Uly has the side stand recall but the bracket only has 2 holes. I'm thinking now the '08 Uly has the 3 hole bracket. Mine looks like the lower stand in the photo. Here's the link to the thread I got the photo from, much discussion about side stand failures. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/370519.html

Barryt, Yes. Call Buell/H-D customer relations they can tell you if your Uly needs the recall. |

Yes, Barry, if you have a Harley dealer nearby that signed up with Harley in Oct., 2009 to service Buells, get parts, etc., for a seven year period. Here is the list: http://www.buell.com/en_US/service-providers.html |

You need to ride in your car with the windows down and a 40000BTU FAP heater blasting in your face if you really want to prepare for the heat. Get a Camelbak or something similar to help stay hydrated while on the go. You'll be crossing some hot, arid country. |

Yep, it's hot. My last ride from Dallas to Ventura Cal. and back it was 121f in Indio Cal. in July. It's was in the 70f's on the coast. |

LOL!!!!! This thread is DEFINITE PROOF of the internet being on steroids!!!! LOL A sore throat in reality becomes a CANCEROUS tumor on the internet!!! LOL Sorry guys but hot is hot and the trip from Calif to San Antonio ISN'T bad at all. I've ridden it with full gear in mid June, all the way to the Santa Monica, both ways, and it was FINE! Yeah, FINE!!! Sure you have to hydrate and you'll PAY if you don't but if you keep hydrated you'll be fine. Don't let the weather stop you. Be safe and enjoy. I think everyone is looking out for his best interest. Hydration is definetly #1. I've been across there three times since 07. |

Well you'll a taste of it and can study what it would be like crossing that on a bike when it's 104-109f this week. |
