I suspect that quite a few "odd" problems could be resolved with this knowledge. My XB9SX had numerous small eratic problems and I was put onto this thread. I don't swap out parts without knowing where a problem lies. I suspect I polished off those connections simply unplugging the ECM to troubleshoot a short. Now at least I am pretty certain I can repair the old ECM. I'm not having any luck finding a suitable replacement. Many thanks for the original post. Should be required reading for anyone having intermittent problems and strange trouble codes. |

Willy, my 9sx had a problem that could explain yours... When replacing the battery, I routed the wire bundle for the ECM over the battery terminal. It wore through and created a near microscopic nick in the insulation, which would short that wire to the battery terminal, and cause all sorts of oddness. I re-insulated, re-routed, and armored up that bundle and never had a problem again. Worth a thought anyway... |

Oh, and on another thread, somebody posted a link to an article by hobbyists that are now using GE Silicone II for potting. You wan't a silicone that doesn't smell like vinegar when it is curing. There are true electronics potting silicones, but they are expensive and hard to source. Silicone II is available everywhere and is cheap. Hot melt glue works well if it is enclosed, but it seems to shrink and harden over time. |

Much appreciated Reep. I think I did the damage while I was unplugging everything to check the wiring after I fixed a short to my turn signals and developed a no start condition. Placed one finger on the ECM plugs and nudged it gently and the bike started. I had had a very intermittent problem with performance and even though I can't positively prove it, I believe it was those solder joints doing me dirty. I am pretty much positive I polished off the board joints when I unplugged the leads. Different ECM now, not the correct one but the bike starts and runs. (I have an 07 and I borrowed an 03 ECM that is known good). That was me that tripped over the acetic acid vs Silicone II article and posted it. If I were a little more ambitious I'd be re soldering my board right now, but I lack the ambition. I don't mind experimenting, but I like this bike and am missing it pretty badly about now. |

Hi guys, just a quick "thanks" to this old post... I've just freshened up the welds of a broken ECM and it came back to life. I knew the fault was in the connections (tapping them with the tip of the finger the degrees of TPS varied dramatically) but without the photos of Uly_man and Garrcano I would not know where to cut the shell. Happy buellism to everyone, bye!
