I am no mechanic at all. I'm not particularly handy. But I do love well made tools. While I was in Daytona for Bike Week last week I accidentally broke the two plastic cords that keep the lids from dropping down on one of my Journey cases. Not the biggest deal in the world. I went to Home Depot and bought some plastic covered braided wire and a couple of aluminum ferrule sets to do a repair. Cutting the wire proved too much for my wimpy wire cutters that work just fine for electrical wire, but not worth a crap for the wire I was using for the repair. So today I went back to Home Depot and bought a pair of DeWalt compound action angled pliers. Boy did they snip right through the wire. It gave me such joy to use a well made tool after struggling with the wrong tool for the job. Now, if I'd only had a better tool to crimp the ferrules, I'd really been a happy guy. And the best part is that the bag is successfully repaired.  | ||

mine busted three years ago. I still need to get around to fixing it sometime, maybe this year but then maybe not! | ||

"Now, if I'd only had a better tool to crimp the ferrules, I'd really been a happy guy." You can use a set of heavy duty electrical crimpers. The sort they use on High Voltage cable terminals. They cost to much to buy but maybe you know someone who might have a set to help you out. | ||

Using the proper (and quality) tool for the job is pure ecstasy. When you accomplish something in seconds or minutes that would take you an hour of blood sweat and irritation with the improper tool, it is truly wonderful. | ||

Gotta ask, were these the side cutter/diagonal cutters from DeWalt that you got? Every other review of them I've read hated them. Just asking because like you, I love tools. Got a new pair of Irwin cable cutters in the mail today... my joy quickly fell to sorrow and frustration  when they left strands of coax shielding uncut. Looking at NWS or Knipex now. | ||

Pro tools never come cheap but you can get a better price if you look around a bit. You will not go far wrong with CK tools but they are not cheap. I have CK stuff thats 30 years old, very well used and are still fine. | ||

Uly_man, you're killing me. I thought I had it narrowed down... then I started looking at the CK stuff. This place is supposed to be my safe place. You know, I only find stuff my for my BadWeb habits here  . I usually get my tool fix over at GarageJournal  . Seriously, thanks. Always looking to broaden my toolbox with tools I'll enjoy using. | ||

I dont know about any of that but I am a Pro and use my tools "day-in-day-out". I do not need or want crap tools. | ||

I agree totally. What a nice day.....I got to use my torches, plasma cutter, mig welder, two grinders, jack, blocks, stands, clamps, hammers, and measuring tools(oh yeah, my broom to). Yep! As long as I am not interrupted too many times it is great!  |
