Im considering adding an oil temp gauge. Not for an actual 'performance' gauge, but for an FYI. Has anyone else done this? Any hints? | ||

You can buy one for big bucks but the readout is not near as precise as the one you can make for yourself for just a few bucks. Also, you can remove and check the oil level without wearing gloves if you make your own. The one that is sold is aluminum and surely gets just as hot as the oil it is checking. Oil pressure gauge would be nice but oil temp is pretty darned useful. With a glance you can see if you've ridden far enough to turn on the fan which is a good indication that you are not building up condensation in your engine. Fan will always come on at shutdown if the oil temp reads 150 or greater at the swingarm. Remember that the swingarm oil tank is also a means of cooling the oil so 150 F means the oil is much, much hotter inside the engine oil passageways. | ||

Oil pressure gauge on the big twin always goes way down as the oil gets good and hot. Assuming the oil pressure sensor is doing its job, I think that ULY engine light is good enough. On the other hand, oil temp is a function of many factors including riding time, rpm, ambient temp, even rain will greatly affect the oil temp. If you continually do short rides, the oil never gets to operating temp and your bikes longevity can suffer greatly. The tranny/primary oil takes even longer to heat up since it relies on conduction from the engine and the gears and primary oil working the oil to heat it up. I'm sure it takes quite some time to heat tranny oil up during cold weather and that is a good reason why there is so many photos of splooge reported on BadWeb. Even bearing failure in some cases. I've read EG's write up a few times and considered it. I haven't found a 7" stem thermometer yet. I've considered buying the on off American sportbike but $90 is more than I want to spend. It's not like it's needed just would be nice to know the oil temp. Thanks for all the input | ||

The metal clip slides right off along wih that white ceramic sleeve that is shown in the photo. When I was making these oil temp dip sticks, Kitchen Kaboodle is where I sent off for all the thermometers. Mine works as well as the day I made it and that means perfectly. If you had clicked the link that was in the archived link that GAMDH provided up above then you would have seen the Kitchen Kaboodle link that I provided and found this temp probe already. Also what is kind of nice is that red area on the temp dial is right where the oil temp needs to be for the fan to come on when you turn the key to the off position. Around 150 F. | ||

If I did I would use ECM-Spy to monitor these functions because it uses the sensors the bike does and therefore gives all the data used to run the bike. Cheap, easy, clean plus lots of other advantages. | ||

The first farkle i did was the electraglider 1997 mod using the very same kithchen kaboddle temp gauge.2 years and no issues. block of the oil cooler in winter to keep oil temp above 160. seen the temp go as high as 230 idling in traffic. comes in handy knowing your oil is in its operating range! | ||

Jason, The Uly dipstick plastic is tough stuff. I made that wood fixture so that I wouldn't ruin the dipstick threads, which is probably what will happen if you just clamp the plug into a vice. PM me if you need advice. I made quite a few of those for other Uly owners a couple of years or so ago. Make sure you follow my tutorial closely and it will be a unit that should last as long as your Uly. You will see how useful it really is. I still look to see what the oil temp is most every time I get off my bike. | ||

Just FYI, HERE is a thread (Ducati.ms forum) on the OIL PRESSURE GAUGE I installed on my Ducati Multistrada. It got mixed reviews, but I like it. I was always gonna install one on the Uly (much lower pressure), but haven't so far... --Doc |
