Does anyone know the difference between a 2010 DX and WX Engine? |

If they're both 1200s...no difference. |

Thats a really good question. The parts manual distinctly separates the Uly models (XP, X, and XT), Firebolt, and Lightnings (XB12Scg, XB12SX, and XB12Ss) into 3 separate groups. That doesnt make any sense because at Ratbuell identified they are both 1200 engines. There has to be some different bracketry associated with the Uly engine vs the lightning vs the firebolt engine because the internals are all identical. |

Maybe there are differences in the color of the powdercoat? |

I thought in 2010 that all of the engines were blacked out (black wrinkle powder coat) but I could be wrong there. |

To try to lighten the engine would be expensive, I think. |

Parts manuals separate because Ulysses, Ss, and TT models have a longer frame and different swingarm (54" wheelbase). Firebolt and Lightning share the main frame and swingarm (52" wheelbase)...but have vastly different tail sections and front ends (fairing/flyscreen; bars/clipons; instrument cluster; wiring and fuses/relays). Different pages in the book for those reasons do not mean different engines. Any XB12 ECM can be used on any XB12 of the same generation (DDFI-II or DDFI-III); the HP ratings are the same; the TQ ratings are the same; the gear ratios are the same. Early Ulysses' had different powdercoating to match the titanium-colored wheels, but that was it. |

Rat- Yes, I get what you're saying BUT the fact is that there are 3 distinct part numbers for the XB12 engines in the parts manual for the 2010's. 19287-10 for the lightnings (12's) 19288-10 for the firebolt 19505-10 for the Ulys All state w/o throttle bodies and front isolator. |

"Does anyone know the difference between a 2010 DX and WX Engine?" As said there is none and they have nothing to do with the engine. These letters are Buell "motorcycle type" identification codes and are part of the VIN number. DX is a 2010 XB12X, WX is a 2010 Lightning SCG, FX is a 2010 XB12XT and so on. The engine type codes for 2010 bikes run from 01 to 06. Your bike is a 03 1203cm Thunderstorm. We have the same bike. Common parts will probably have the same number across a product range and is normal for bikes and cars. Do not take it as green though and always check its right. For example the 2006 and 2010 XB12X subframe rails are exactly the same casting and post holes. The 2010 rails have an extra thread on the L/H side for a second Earth mount. On the 07 and earlier engines, the timing cover plate was different depending on the bike the engine went in- it said "Ulysses" or "Firebolt" or whatever. I honestly haven't paid that much attention to the 08-up engines (even though I have one!) but it may be something similar. |

As I said common parts. An example. If you generated a part number for each bolt and there were 20 of the same on the bike and 20 on each of other 10 bikes you would have have 200 part numbers rather than one. If you did that with all the other common parts and then, as you would have to do, have a part bin in the stock room for each one you would need a warehouse half the size of Texas to hold them. In other words if the part number is different its because its not the same. (Message edited by uly_man on February 23, 2012) |
