Will KTM H-B side cases fit on a Uly rack. Or will all Hepco-Becker boxes fit the Uly frame? Any Suggestions for side cases that will fit in Uly factory rack? | ||

I used the explorers they fit good and are a great bag just mount on opposite sides. lid opens front to back with is ok unless you forget to lock bag ( Done once but found lid it was fine) Only other problem is rear signals touch bag have been thinking of shortening post but haven't got around to it. Oh and the angle of being on the opposite side is that it will contact top case before they open all the way so they won't stay open on their own you have to hold lid open.  | ||

Which factory Uly racks do you have? The ones for the outdoorsman/junior cases will allow more luggage options than the journeymen racks. | ||

Oh I forgot the ktm bags do fit I tried a set on before I bought these ones. I think those are the Gobis | ||

You are correct Barocky, the KTMs are Gobis, but they are smaller than the standard Gobi pannier. Made special for the KTM but still hook up to our journeymen racks. I'm thinking about buying a set of new Gobis this spring, if I can't find them used. Damn, they're not cheap! | ||

Outdoorsman racks put the bags 2" further back on the bike, allowing use of the passenger pegs (Outdoorsmans are larger than Journeys). The kit also includes a relocation setup for the turn signals to move them back, out of the way. And, they put the bag latch at the rear instead of the front. ALL H-B bags use the same mounting "foot", the only difference is latch orientation. And, as noted, the larger bags will keep you from carrying a passenger (unless they just don't have feet), if you have Journey mounts. | ||

What is the widest set of gobi cases that fit on the Journeymen racks that one could live with? And other than the Journeymen and gobi, what panniers or hard cases work with the Journeys rack. Thank's again. (Message edited by Redtail on January 18, 2012) | ||

I installed Hepco-Becker Alu Standard 45's. The rail at the back of the seat would not allow the panniers to mount on the factory brackets so using them as a template, I fabricated new racks with the mounting latch to the rear and mounted 2" forward and 1.5" out. Well worth the effort!  | ||

By wide I mean from front to rear of the case. Beached. If I get a set of cases that might get into the pass foot pegs It looks like a re-fab job like you did is the way to go. I don't have a welder yet. Just a gas hammer (torch) and a kick ass grinder. I just saw a used set of Journeymen cases (3) go for over $1,200 and Know from what I have seen on this site I can get a set together for at least 1/2 of that. Thanks for all your help. | ||

I have a set of H&B aluminum cases on my Uly and they didn't have the interference issue Beached encountered.? The footpegs cleared the cases as well but just to give my insignificant other more room I bought a set of relocators from someone on this board. They are very nice and worth the money. Hey Redtail, I have a set of Buell cases I am going to be selling let me know if you are interested. They are the magneseum and black ones not the all black ones. They have some rash on them but work fine. I have all three. | ||

D-B, A little plastic bag over the seat on your escape pod would be a good idea. Do the Micatechs open on the side? Did you fab anything to hang your back-up bike? | ||

George, Good call. I tried, but the bags kept ripping at speed. I couldn't be bothered to fashion something more robust cause it would be worth something and that's a theft issue when traveling in South America. Hanging off like that, she'll pick up more dirt and dust than a sticky tongue drug across my yard. Nasty dirty. It's a beater bike anyhow so no real worries. Needs a good hosedown whenever I ride. Not really an issue now because I lost the bike in a collision with a japanese cage in a small town crossing Venezuela. Snapped the frame. I donated the bike to a mechanics little kid. He swiftly welded it and was psyched. Till I get back stateside it's just two wheels instead of four (probably for the better). The rack I welded from 3/4" square steel tubing and bolted it up underneath the stock Uly luggage rack. To that I bolted standard bike hangers from a car-mounted bicycle rack. Not pretty but does the job just fine. Bike loaded up like I do has no more frontal resistance than the Michatechs, and the rack makes a great fasten/lock point. I can pickup the rear end of the Uly if needed to maneuver or pull out of tough spots. That rack is also a great way to protect my ass: Did a great job taking out the headlight of a SUV traveling too close while in Guatemala. I had the larger H&B Xplorer boxes, but their cheap plastic began to sag, crack and break where they mount to the Uly racks, and also the bottom plate, which is all plastic. Probably not an issue on smaller boxes that don't hold as much, but I needed haulers that were more durable. |
