My 2010 bike had not been used for ten weeks. The first two weeks the battery strap had been taken off. For the 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th week the battery was connected. Each time it started fine but I only turned it over until it started. On the 10th week I had to try twice before it started but it did start. It seems to spin over easier as well, like a normal bike.

It is parked outside (cold and wet) and at no time did I have any of that starter "clicking" you can get. I was lucky to get two weeks with the 06 bike and even with a brand new HD OEM battery, on a warm dry day, it was no better.

I am not able to use a battery tender and if I was not using the bike I would have to switch between two batteries. Easy enough to do but still a pain in the ass. I had the same problem with my Aprilia RSV-R. Two weeks and it would not start.

It was always a bit of a lottery starting the 06 bike and not something you need. I do not know what they have done but it works. Maybe they have changed the timing for start up? Who knows but the two bikes are VERY different.

It takes battery power to start the motor, then takes time (over 30 minutes) to recharge the battery by running the bike.

But I think the problem is your starting it, then shutting it off before it gets warmed up. The plugs will get wet and foul out. There is a method on the 2010 to unfoul the plugs, but others will tell you to the damage is done and it's time to replace the plugs.
Only start it if your going to run it long enough to warm it all the way up (which require riding it around for 1/2 hour or so).

If your storing it, winterize it (especially winterize the fuel), put the battery on a trickle charger designed to be left on a motorcycle battery, and leave it alone until your ready to ride it
If you can't get a wire to the bike, pull the battery, not much holding it in there.

It's still ok to look it. Better yet, spend the down time putting farkles on it : )

There are no starting problems with the 2010, or at least with mine, bike which was what I was trying to show.

I made a point of making it very, very hard to start the 2010 bike but it still did. This was a test between the two bikes. Not many will have had both bikes and been able to judge the differences between them. Which is considerable.

Is it possible that the battery is fine and the terminals have become corroded or some other point in the circuit?

Being outside in the moisture is pretty rough on any exposed metal surfaces and any amount of oxide acts as an insulator.

Do you have access to a DVM?

The difference is probably the battery, the 06 had an older battery that didn't have as much life in it. If anything the 2010 would be harder to start due to the weaker charging system, and higher electrical load when running.

Weaker charging system sounds like going backward to me. My 06 has been such a fine bike. Only one battery replaced and 35,000 miles. Just like the Energizer Bunny, it keeps on going and going. I'm kind of mystified just what this thread is about.

Sorry not to have been clearer with my post. Both bikes were bought with about the same miles on them and about the same age. About the same price as well, one owner and mint condition. Showroom in fact. Aint I the lucky one.

Today I fitted my original 2006 OEM HD Uly battery to my 2010 bike and it was fine. Started easy and it had been standing un-charged for two months. I had also used it, without a re-charge to try and start a three liter BMW car. Very good for a five year plus bike battery.

Once I even direct wired the - and + on to the starter with a brand new fully charged 800 CCR Exide Silver battery and it was still the same. It just turned over a little more often.

I dont know what it is on the 06 bikes but I fitted heated grips and using them killed the battery. Maybe its the charge rate on the older bikes but the spec says its the same.

The point of the post was to to try, since I have had both bikes to get an idea of what the problem might be and how to fix it. I would not think many have had the fortune to have had the first and last versions of the Uly and be able to make a direct comparison between each machine. Which is, in short, are all very good but the 2010 bike is close to perfect.
