Ever since I had to rotate the engine I've had a problem with the front muffler support bolt. They must be breaking cause I used steel lock nuts both times because of proximity to muffler heat, shouldn't be loosening. The only thing I can think of is the muffler to header clamp is not tight enough putting more strain on the support. I reused that clamp and damn if it wasn't tight going back together. I really thought the support should be capable of holding the muffler up regardless. That's two bolts within 1200 miles. Any other ideas? |

Sometimes it helps to loosen all of the bolts holding the muffler and headers, then retighten a little at a time making several passes over each of the bolts or nuts until tight. A little miss alignment can make a lot of pressure on one bolt. |

Make sure you're using the tightening sequence as described in the Manual. That being said, I've had two shear off, haven't had an issue since I replaced it with an alloy steel bolt and nylon insert nut from the hardware store. Again, the sequence is important as are the torque values. |

It doesn't hurt to lubricate the head pipe where it slips into the muffler. A good choice is anti seize. |

Xbimmer could have a point.I got the replacement bolt from a NAPA store near me but just assumed that any allen bolt is of a grade better than grade 8.Maybe they are not and I should be looking for something better. I did follow the manual but everything about the muffler to header connection was a big pain.Probably a good idea to redo that part like everyone says and use a new strap clamp. Thanks all. |
