Shouldn't the paper filter remove these metal particles anyways? That said, I'm trying to figure out a way to attach a strong little magnet to my oil dipstick, or maybe attach it with a string? I don't think that drain plug magnet does a whole heck of alot. |

I do not believe that particles below 40 micron will be effectively filtered. That is why you will see grey sludge on the end the drain plug magnet. I have a 2- 3/8" diameter Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnet with 110 lb pull force left over from a work project. I stick it to the bottom of the oil filter. I don't know if it helps but the price is right. |

I like to stick these to the drainplug of my ironhead' tranny and engine drain: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?produc tId=2102642 They would always come out fuzzy. Note: the picture in the radioshack website is blown up HUGE. they are 3/16" in diameter They are strong enough to hold on to each other through your finger! |

Snake oil or not, stuff you find on the magnet is stuff not floating around in your oil or restricting your filter. |

Those rare earth magnets that Nate mentions look like a great deal. |

These look better yet and the price is low. Put these around the filter. http://www.magnet4less.com/product_info.php?produc ts_id=302&ctype=2&gclid=CKb497vQoqsCFYw32goduxV3oA |

EG- I bought several magnets that appear to be identical to the ones you just pointed out at the local Hobby Lobby. Not the manliest store to be seen in, but they are SUPER strong...and about to get friendly with my filter. |

The problem I have with putting them on the outside of the filter is the steel can will shield most of the magnetic force from the inside. I feel it's better to have a teeny magnet in with the Oil. Also, better to mount it low so that it helps gravity settling out dense stuff. |

I was changing my oil today and decided to put my money where my mouth is. I bought the radioshack magnets. When I removed the drain plugs, I found that there were already magnets on them from the factory. DOH! Oh well, I stacked the much stronger magnet right on top of the tranny and oil drains. The original magnets had just a touch of fuzz on there with more in the transmission. We'll see if these magnets harvest more I guess. |

I have a feeling that the factory plug magnets only pull in metal that just happens to flow past them. A magnet on the dipstick might be in a better position to pick up metal filings. |
