Went to buy some 15W50 mobil 1 but noticed it did not claim diesel rating of CF on the bottle. So I ended up buying Full Syn Valvoline 20W50 with CF rating. When I got home I got online and found that Mobil 1 does claim CF but you have to go to this online page to find it. What's the deal with that? Must want to push us to buy the more expensive v-twin oil which proudly displays CF rating on the bottle. | ||

Must want to push us to buy the more expensive v-twin oil which proudly displays CF rating on the bottle. That may be because the Mobil 1 20/50 V-Twin oil is specifically designed for air cooled motors whereas the other variants are for water cooled higher revving motors. Just because they have CF on the bottle doesn't guarantee that they have the same addititives etc and these are important ingredients in anti foaming and heat resistance. Mobil 1 V-Twin is extremely good and I would spend th eextra to run this rather than some 'diesel' spec CF branded oil. | ||

HOWEVER, we fortunate Uly riders have a brilliantly engineered powertrain that uses separate lubricants for engine and tranmission (including clutch). So you can use Mobil-1 with all its friction modifiers and not worry about clutch issues... --Doc PS. I've used Mobil-1 15W-50 in bikes w/shared oil (e.g. Aprilia Mille) and had NO clutch issues. However, I'm not using it in the Ducati Multistrada. | ||

So the question still stands then: Is Mobil-1 V-twin 20w50 a satisfactory oil for the modified sportster engine in Buells such as the Ulysses? Can/should it be used in both the oil reservoir and the transmission on the Ulysses? The Mobil-1 syn says CF rating but not the CF-4 diesel that the Buell manual calls for so is it adequate/compatible? The questions are about Mobil-1, not Amsoil or Valvoline. | ||

The v-twin works fine in the primary. I'm sure it's good in the motor as well. I'm still using up the 15-50 mobile one I bought when wal mart had it on clearance then I'll move to something else. Probably some kind of diesel oil. | ||

WalMart dropping the 15W50 Mobil 1 is going to get costly. I has used it for many years in all 3 bikes (including the KTM that has a wet clutch). Now it looks like I'll be paying a lot more for what is available around here (the Valvoline or Mobil motorcycle oils). going from about $5/qt to over $9/qt. Thinking about switching to Diesel oil (Rotella or Delvac), but I have gotten comfortable with synthetic, and am not keen on the syn versions 5W base stock. | ||

Can/should it be used in both the oil reservoir and the transmission on the Ulysses? Mobil themselves actually recommend their Mobil-1 10w40 motorcycle oil for the primary. But yes, you could use the V-Twin 20w50 with no ill effect. | ||

Arcticktm, From what I read in Bobistheoilguy's Motor oil University, synthetics base stock on a 5W40 or 15W40 would be the 40weight. I wonder if there's any difference (in this regard) between the true synthetics and the base stocks that start out as petroleum and are refined to meet the synthetic specs. |
