09 XB12XT I think the safety switch on my clutch is starting to die. For the last 2 days when I go to start the XT it acts funny. I turn the key on, then thumb the ignition on and hit the starter switch. Nothing happens. After the 2nd or third try it starts normally. Just installed a new battery about 2 weeks ago. Rather than the starter, I thinking its the safety switch on the clutch. Sound reasonable? I don't have a shop manual so I have to ask the collective. Where does the clutch safety switch live. I image its an easy job to R and R it but rather than guessing, can some one tell me where it is? Thanks in advance. |

Zane, How you doing? Is your neutral light on? If your neutral light is not on try pulling in the clutch, if it starts up then check the neutral switch connector under the front pulley cover. I have had a similar problem with my XT and it is the connector. It seems tight when you put it together, but when the neutral light stops working I find the connector is loose.(I know it sounds crazy) If your neutral light comes on I would make sure all the grounds are clean, especially the frame to engine ground under the airbox. |

Sounds like a relay. Bad contacts will often take a few tries and then fire because the contacts somewhat clean themselves as you work them. |

Hi Rob, doing ok. Was out of work for quite a while when my job got out outsourced to India. I'm doing contract work now to make ends meet. Still waiting to hear about a full time perm gig in Greensboro, NC. All if all, can't complain. Can't even begin to describe how much I love this bike. Yes dash appears normal. I always park the bike in Neutral to protect my self from my own stupidity. Neutral indicator does come on. A switch or relay makes sense to me. Hit the switch and nothing happens, hit it again and hold it and it'll fire off. Battery is brand new and it runs fine once it turns over. I'll try with it a little this weekend. |
