Do yourself a favor and get some compression nuts instead. Once installed, you can remove the shield without removing the fly screen. Somewhere in the archives here is a write up I did on it. Some pix will give you an idea if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Hmm I hadnt thought of going that route. That would be a much better way of going about it. Thanks for the info and pics. |

It's pretty simple. Just put a little soap on the nuts and pull them through with the screw in. It also seemed to help a bit with air flow. |

Worked like a charm. I was surprised my local hardware store carried the "expansion nuts" or Well nuts as hillman calls them. The 3/4 diameter fit the holes in the flyscreen fairing dead on w/ a dab if soap. Thanks for thr heads up on this mounting setup. |

You have those nuts in backwards. The screw is supposed to compress them and swell them up on the inside like a pop rivet. My X1 is full of those. They are great except for in corrosive areas where they can rust together with the the screw. |

Mounting them backwards like that is a good idea. Other than the fact that they could fall behind the flyscreen, your method increases the gap and the airflow. |

It works, , what else can I say? That 1/2" of extra space actually cleaned up the air flow a bit and works great with the Palmer Brackets I replaced the Laminar Lip with. Can't tell you what happens at triple digits as I seldom run over 90. I do, however, ride in some pretty ferocious winds and they have held up. As always, YMMV. |
