I had to remove the ECM to install the Rider Comfort Kit on my Ulysses. When I loosened the front ECM screw the nut/fastener that is on the other side of the trunk pan fell off. Of course I cannot find this piece now. Does anyone know what the piece is/part number, and can I buy it at the hardware store or do I need to get it from Buell? Also how in the heck can you put this screw back on when the shroud you just installed prevents you from holding onto the nut on the other side of the trunk pan? Posted this in the knowledge vault with no responses |

Do a search on "relocate ECM" on this forum. You are better off not remounting the ECM in the original location as the seat pan can crack the ECM at the connectors. |

It's a standard 1/4" x 20 lock nut, available at any decent hardware store. Easiest to hold in place with a pair of needle nose pliers with bent 90 degree "tip" |

How do you even get the pliers up there underneath the trunk pan? Doesn't seem like there is enough room.... |

Busting your balls, you registered three years ago, and have eighty posts. That reminds me of a friend that only comes around when he wants something... Anyway do a search, your problem is not unique in any way. Many, many others have had the same problem. One guy has made/invented a tool just to hold the nut. You really are better off relocating it. Or bending the tab on the battery pan that the ECM is attached to downward. Pointing the ECM downward will take the bend out of the connector wires. If nothing else just stick the screw back down in the hole, and screw the bolt back down. The ECM is not going to go anywhere. And feel free to visit more often. Many times I've read about a problem / issue / mod or idea here, before it has happened or occurred to me. I'll then bookmark the thread, and come back to it if the need arises. Good luck Mr. Cop |

I will address the ball busting first HA! I do visit the site often, but your right I do post a lot of messages when I NEED something. I do search for topics, but I sometimes take the lazy route and post a question. I would like to say because of this site and the service manuals neither of my Buells (previous was a 98 S3T) have ever seen the inside of a Harley Garage. |

Way cool. Glad you can take a BB'in. Bummer you couldn't keep the S3T. I still want one. Post more often if you can. I have found the inter-action great. You'll love the Comfort Kit, makes a huge difference. Many, myself included, then go farther and block off the space between the seat and frame, the frame hole right near the head, and any other spots the heat comes through. You can use some good old alum foil - take a medium piece and fold it over a bunch of times to create layers, then tape it on with anything that works. Gorilla tape works. Or you can use real insulation tape over the spots/holes, or you can get some Thermotec, and really get jigi with it. I have also thought of cutting up a wally-world auto shade and trying it out. American Sport Bike has Thermotec:http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16130.html I go a different route in the summer. I still use the comfort kit, but have taken off all the foil, and unblocked the cracks. I then took off my Air Box Cover, and ride around without it. This allows plenty of air to circulate around keeping the bike cooler in the hot months. I do get a little more heat on my leg, but it's manageable. Might block a little of the side off this year though. It also helps get more cool air into the engine, and produces a great honk, that I happen to like. YMMV - Have Fun. |

I replaced the front screw with a longer screw, threaded up from the bottom, and nutted to the bike to hold it in place. I then "hollowed out" the mounting ear on the ECM to clear the new nut, so it would sit flat. Installed the ECM on the now-"threaded rod", and nutted it down. |

I would also spend 5 minutes and remove the pulley cover - I dropped that same nut and it took me ages to find it ......sitting on the belt under the pulley cover. It would be a really unlucky bounce to have it sitting on the bottom run of the belt ready for you to wheel your bike backwards but you never know. |

The dealer who installed my Comfort Kit did not install this bolt or spacer block. Thanks to this list I became aware of the ECM/seat problem. I used a Lag screw with a bronze bushing and some rubber washers to fabricate my own spacer. The screw seemed to work fine, although a bolt would be better. I was in a hurry to leave on a trip...I might go back and try a captive bolt. |

I think I am going to try the "bracket" method. Have to get a new reservoir fastener first though...wasn't one there in the first place and ive never touched that area until now? Bought it used...think the guy before me lost it. Thanks Rays I will take the pulley cover off and take a look see. |

Heat the shroud up with a heat gun and then force a gap with a screwdriver handle so that you can get your social finder down there with the nut taped on it. That's how I've done it twice, once for my ULY and once for my boy's ULY. |

Due to all the suggestions and the amount of people who have had to buy new ECM's I went ahead and relocated the ECM using a bracket affixed to the shock reservoir. I didn't see any evidence of rubbing or cracking, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Anyway it was a lot easier than installing it back in the original spot! Thanks for all the help! |

I relocated my ECM the otherday. I installed the comfort kit last year and had a bear of a time starting the front ECM nut.....so when I relocated the ECM out of harms(seat) way I used the hole that I drilled in the comfort kit shield to install the nut, holding it with a pair of needle nose pliers and Walla! out it came. |
