I have that same nipple uncovered on my 06 Uly also and my bike runs perfect. At first I freaked out wondering if something became disconnected, but after some investigation, I found out that this nipple is used for the CARB(california) bikes that came with a canister connected to it. Like frog man said, don't spend any time worrying about that. There are also the seals between the carb and the head. If those had been messed with in the past, could be making problems. |

I tried to check for the air leak but I cannot get it to idle well enough to do so. What is the cable that comes off of the bottom of the throttle pulley? It looks like it has rubbed through, but doesn't do anything when I rotate the throttle. |

You've got two cables- one to open the throttle and one to pull it closed. Maybe the pull cable is broken and hanging up? That would interfere with a TPS reset if someone tried it previously. |

Here is a quick go-by/refresher on doing the TPS reset: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i33__Qkvhn4 |

> It gives me a code 21, which is for the interactive exhaust control valve, but the thing is I have a HAWK muffler on the bike and the valve is not utilized anymore. That's normal. And I don't think a TPS reset is going to help here. The TPS doesn't just go out of whack suddenly and cause those symptoms unless you swapped in an ECM from a completely different bike without a reset. > What is the cable that comes off of the bottom of the throttle pulley? The lower of the two cables is the return cable that helps pull the throttle closed. If it breaks, the throttle just won't spring closed as hard, and the throttle grip will feel loose. It won't affect how the bike runs. Look down in the throttle body as you rotate the throttle and see if the butterfly is moving smoothly. Your symptoms actually sound a bit like what my bike did when the TB shaft broke. I was also in AL at the time. Also check your plugs and wires. Are both headers heating up? If not, maybe one of the wires has rubbed through or a plug broke, and it's grounding out. |

Well i went to Murf's place today and we checked some things out. Thanks for the help man! Found a small rubbed spot on the front cylinder spark plug wire and put a piece of hose over it to prevent further rubbing. We checked the bank angle sensor and all looked good. The butterfly in the throttle body reacts to throttle movement as it should and the shaft is solid. Sprayed wd40 down around the intake's and there was no idle change so I think an air leak is out. Also got the engine hot and adjusted the idle. I believe that the worn down cable I was referring to is the cable for idle adjustment on this bike. We set the idle to 1000 rpm with the bike really hot and it has been running fine since then which was about 80 miles ago. I had thought I read somewhere that idle adjustment had to be done with the ECMspy hooked up, but I guess it does not. The idle adjustment couldn't of really cured my problem could it? If so I am going to be really pissed at myself lol. It seems to be running great now. Maybe with cleaning all of the grounds etc the ECM had to relearn a few things? It ran like crap for the first 5-10 minutes on the way to Murf's house and then cleared up and ran fine, just idled high when hot. It now idles at 1000 when hot. We were not able to get ECMspy to work because his cable is a serial 9 pin and we were not able to get a serial to usb connector to work correctly for us. Does the ECMspy pigtail need a certain brand usb to serial adapter? I know when I used to tune my acura it required a certain one, I believe it was a dynex. Drivers interface differently or something. . . Anyway, I am going to head out in the morning and see how things go. Wish me luck and thank you for all of the inputs. I will be sure to post my results, good or bad. I was going to change spark plugs, what numbers do you guys use? I was looking for NGK DCPR9E plugs, is that the typically used plug? |

I use stock 10R12 plugs, never had a problem. You do NOT need ECMspy to adjust your idle, as you discovered. You DO need it to reset the TPS. Normally, the correct process is 1. reset TPS via computer, then 2. set idle speed to 1050. Both need to be done on a HOT motor. |

> The idle adjustment couldn't of really cured my problem could it? No, I don't think so. Idle adjustment doesn't just suddenly change. The only thing I can think of is that someone else adjusted the idle too high to compensate for some other problem, and that other problem went away. For instance if the bike had a cylinder that wasn't firing, the previous owner may have turned the idle adjustment screw up to get the RPM back to 1050 without actually fixing the problem. The bike would then idle really high after the cylinder started firing again. > Maybe with cleaning all of the grounds etc the ECM had to relearn a few things? Could be? The ECM reads from the 02 sensor on the rear header and adjusts the entire fuel map up or down by a percentage to get as close as it can to the correct air/fuel ratio. It only does so when the motor is warmed up and running over 3000 RPM. |

It looks like you fixed the initial problem the previous owner missed. The #1 plug wire would wear through where the idle cable rubbed it causing a miss on that plug. Probably still enough juice to make the plug fire but weakly. Then for problem #2, they set the idle up to compensate for the weak fire in one cylinder, then you get the hanging idle from having it set too high. Sounds like you have a good fix. These were common problems when the '06 Uly's first came out. We on BadWeB spent a fair amount of time and information sharing to figure these things out. We have seen other things that may be in your future, don't fret to ask questions, most are easy fixes that are not worth the time to fight with a dealer over. |

Well I made it home and the bike ran without a hiccup. I did just under 2100 miles in 46 hours. Alexander City, Al to San Diego, CA. Man was that a ride, it was 100+ going through texas and new mexico and then in the high 40's and 50's going through arizona and california at night. The second day was 1200 miles from Abilene TX to San Diego. I feel as though my shoulders have been beaten with a bat, but other than that feeling ok. Definitely wish I would of had time to go on HWY 40 and see the grand canyon on the way, but that will have to wait. Thanks for the help guys. Wow I had no idea that those problems were common in the Uly. It runs great now though! I am going to be doing a lot of work to the bike in the near future to make her more happy haha. |

Glad to hear you made it ok. Hopefully you had a good ride despite the heat and pace. It was a pleasure meeting you, you were a good example of patience. Murf |

Wow! Kudo's to you, Oddjob, for asking the questions and then implementing the tips you got and kudo's to those who had the knowledge and took the time to help. Very cool! This forum is really something. Happy to hear that you made it and that the bike is running well. (Message edited by buellerxt on June 02, 2011) |
