I have an 09 xb12xt. On a weekend trip in AR. Check engine light comes on steady stays on, bike runs fine at speed but at idle is rough with what seems like a miss but does not quit. Key off and back on will remove engine light but will eventually return. While at speed it will go off for maybe 30 minutes and return later. Always steady when on. Any ideas or suggestions. Is this a major problem as in abort weekend and head for home? I live in Dallas. Thanks. |

It could be any number of things. Whats the bikes history? Miles? Off hand I know the fuel pumps had some gremlins in the 09's. It could be the Exhaust servo. Did you check all your fuses? I know there are a few Buell riders in AR. Check out the BRAN to find someone with ECMspy, at least you can read the codes. |

A good starting place may be your exhaust valve actuator. Had mine go out on a trip last summer and had the same symptoms. Agree if you can find an HD dealer that still services Buells they can read a code pretty quick for you. |

Harley shop in Ft.Smith Treated me right. Fault was Idle Air Control Circuit. They did not have part. Mainly I wanted to know it was ok to drive and would not leave me stranded. I will get it fixed when I return to Dallas. |

I have a similar problem with my 09. Mine is generating a check engine light IAC error. I had it fixed friday and came home no issues. Went for a ride Sunday and after about 1 hr the check engine light back on and rough idle. I also get the on off backfire etc. The power is definetly cutting out and back on not just a backfire. This time it is much worse and I barely made it to the Harley shop. We will see what gives next week. It does seem to work ok for awhile after it cools but returns fairly soon. We are talking dangerous to ride, multiple back to back cut outs etc. I'm on my second ECM, The sympton was same cut out but not so frequent. No codes generated like now... |

Another point I forgot to mention is that when I was stopped to let thinks cool down I decided to disconect the stepper motor (a bit of shade tree Mechanics) and see what effect that would have. The idle became very low which make sense but the cut out did not stop. We may be able to conclude that the stepper is not at fault but the ECM is sending a bad signal to the stepper? I can troubleshoot the seat ECM by riding waiting for a reoccurance and stand on the pegs (or move back on the seat) and see if it stops. I also could make a block (stop) to place under the seat that would prevent the seat pan from contacting the connectors. |

Update, Dealer has ordered a New ECM. Their were distinct marks on the seat bottom where the connector and the box of ECM made contact. One of the conectors had a crack. They also orderded a Throttle Body (complete). They are going to do the ECM first and see what happens. I will modify the seat bottom by removing some plastic so this won't continue. This will be my 3rd ECM. |

I wish I knew just exactly what the shop did to mine to correct the seat / ecm issue. All I know for sure is that customer service was heavily involved and that it seems to be permanently fixed. I can see no difference in the ecm mounting. Is it possible to adjust how the seat fits? |

Why not ask them? I think the easiest is to just remove some of the plastic on the seat bottom. I also thought about forming a shim of sorts out of wood that projects above the connector. Not sure this is possible given the limited space around the connectors. I think the stepper motor is not defective. Will see. Will keep updating. I really like the bike and hope this can be resolved. I also feel the dealer is treating me right in this matter. Part of the reason I bought the Buell was for the Dealer network. |

dudes, the ECM can easily be relocated to the side, safely away from the seat, there are numerous threads in here on how to do it. |

We are staying closely tuned to this thread as we suspect our Ill Uly thread was spurred by similar ECM issues. Please keep us posted. BeLinda |

Mine is definitely bad. I can wiggle the connectors in my hand and make the bike shut down. Relocated the old ECM and planning to replace in the not too distant future. |

I did a search and found a lot of riders have had this same problem. Most solutions centered around using spacers to prevent the seat from contacting the plugs. One modified the seat pan another filed the plug rim down. Some relocated the ECM but I'm not sure where they are relocating too? No pictures. I think everyone with this bike should address this issue. Actually I think Harley should have done some type of recall. One other observation is the mention of a spacer that is associated with the front mounting bolt on the ECM. This bolt was left out when the Comfort Kit was installed on my bike. I will take some pics of my mod when I get the bike back. |

Thanks for the info on the ECM relocate. We are pretty sure all these problems can be traced to the ECM. Do you remember the error code on the Actuator? |

Exhaust valve code is 21, IAC code is 34. Always handy to print out the code list and keep it under the seat with a jumper wire. |

New ECM, new IAC, I bent the mounting tab to angle the connector down. Put a bolt in the front with some spacers and removed some of the seat pan above the connector. No relocate for me. I like the airflow better in the factory spot. Now for a test ride. I hear Arkansas is a pretty state. Later, from Texas... |
