Good news for me!

I stopped in at my neighborhood HD dealer yesterday, and the service manager was quite cooperative and friendly with me. He took a couple of pictures of my rusty muffler, and called me back today to say that HD Canada has agreed to replace it under warranty. He said that Buell parts are sometimes taking a long time to come in (!) and that he didn't know how long it would be - could be weeks, could be months. But because it's being ordered before the end of my warranty, it's covered.

So now that I've got one on order, and because I'm not interested in watching this new one rust again, I'm thinking of getting something done to the new one before installation to ensure that it won't rust prematurely.

Has anyone done anything effective to a new muffler to prevent rusting? I'm not talking about using BBQ paint here...

What should I be looking into? Ceramic coating?

Anyone know the types of temperatures that the muffler reaches?

ceramic coating. Should only cost about $65-80.

If you want to eliminate some right side heat, get your header coated at the same time. I plan on giving my XT this treatment come winter. A couple years ago I got the X1 header coated inside and out, and the muffler on the outside only. The ceramic coating is far more effective than the fiberglass wrap and ceramic paint I had on the header before.
Cost me $125 for both parts IIRC.

Which dealer in Ontario did this for you?

HD of Ottawa. My warranty is up in May, which is why I brought it in now.

I actually didn't think they would agree to it - yesterday the service manager said that since it was a Buell, they might not be as good about it as they would have been before Buell "went out of business" (his words, not mine).

But he took the pictures and sent it in yesterday, got the response this morning. I'm actually pretty impressed.
