Thinking about taking a week long ride to West Virginia this year. Would like to park the bike at a campground, ride for the day and then return. Looking at the Elkins area as a base camp. Anyone have a suggestion of a better area or a bike friendly campground? |

Are you planning on staying at the same place all week? There all all kinds of places to stay around there. Seneca shadows is nice, there are a few out of the way places on dirt roads like Laurel Fork campground. Kumbrabow State forest is nice as well. My dad has a camp near Romney that's pretty nice where I usually stay and ride from, if not I camp someplace different about every night. |

Come during the WV Buell Rally. The final edition of a series of five. In August. We can show you some great places to camp and ride. Oh lest I forget the great hospitality and food presented. |

The Elkins area is great. Ride 219 - supposedly the 2nd best bike road in the world. There are little roads that go off in both directions. Close to Lewisburg, there is Anthony Creek Station. Takes you into the hinterlands. If you got the money, the Greenbriar is an interesting stop-but bikes have to be parked off campus - dumb rule, but I've seen a lot of beemer GS's there. Try Snowshoe - Cass rail road , Senneca Rocks, the wind mills in Tucker County, Dolly Sods. All excellent riding. The little green signed roads are big on discovery. Back Mountain road is a pick. You are really going to see some neat things! |

PS - If you have time to come out of the mountains - try to make it to Shephardstown, Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg area. Nice little side - lots of history. One other recommendation - Fayetteville - see the New River Gorge - ride down to the river at Fayette Station - Cathedral Cafe at Fayetteville is good food. The Potomac Highlands is motorcycle wonderland - research it well - but a "spit in the wind" tour can sometimes be a huge pleasant surprise. Good luck and welcome to WV |

My son is a chef at the Greenbriar. I've only been there in a cage but we've done a lot of driving around and I'm half afraid of riding there. The roads are great twisty roads but the scenery is beautiful. I tried to let the warden do the sight-seeing while I drove but we still almost went over the side a bunch of times because there are so many great views. |

P.S. One of the places we almost went off the road was on 219. |

The north south roads are great for scenery, the east west roads will be the best riding roads most of the time. Back mountain road is great and you can't miss smoke hole rd if you are anywhere near it. |

Thanks for all the great information. I am going with Triumph and BMW sport touring riders who have jobs so I have to make my schedule around theirs. I doubt if they like any gravel roads. Will have to talk it over with them. |

Great timing for this thread, I'm planning a West Virginia trip in May. I'm planning on staying in state parks and treating myself to one night in the bunk house at the Purple Fiddle. |

Watoga - Blue Bend off Anthony Ck - Pipestem - Babcock - Lodges at Hawks Nest - Cass - http://www.wvstateparks.com/index.html They all have their charms - some better than others. It is easy to run off the road around here - focus is key - you are flying a fighter at 3 ft of altitude. In some places you can park in the middle of the road to take pic's, though! LOL - The roads can be your personal race track too. |

Hmm...I used to spend summers in Alderson, on the Greenbrier River. Might just have to find(make) time to get back sometime soon... |

My I'm planning on camping at Berwind Lake, Cabwaylingo State Forest, Backwater Falls, and Kumbrabow State Forest. I've never been to any of these camping areas, is there any I should mark off or substitute for a nicer area? |

Blackwater Falls State Park is in the general area of Elkins would be my choice, I like to camp there just for fun. If you like to fly fish bring the fly rod. Rt 219 is a great ride from Rich Creek, VA north to Elkins, hard to find a bad rode in the area. Where will you be coming from? |

WV 72 between Parsons and WV 32 is an awesome Uly road. Best be on your game if moving swiftly! County routes are fun too, if a little rougher, Stemple Ridge Road comes to mind, off US 50 at Aurora. Come to think of it US 50 west of Aurora is sweet too (run it uphill for the most grins, downhill can be a bit puckering) |

I can't say much for any of the WV park sites other than Cabwaylingo. There are two sets of sites there, one is off the main road, flat, very wet and mossy. Avoid it. The other is at least uphill a nice gravel road, from which there are paths that the Uly will love Sorry, memory fails me the specifics but both sites are but a few miles apart. The site on the hill being further west. There is a camp host at the uphill site, who can sell firewood as needed and there is a small shelter, and great vault toilets that look down the hill and out into the trees. There is also a diner worth going to (if you like local diners. If you don't like 'em, avoid this....). Go south maybe 15 minutes on highway 23, you'll see it to your right as you get to the big railyard. There is only one railyard so you'll know when you're there. Have fun! Hop Along |

Got home late last night, and in the recent edition of Rider magazine is none other than an article detailing ride routes and camping along 219, smoke hole road, etc... which are all mentioned above! The fellow in the article used Blackwater Falls as his base camp. Funny timing |

he road through Lost river State park from 259 over to county route 7 is pretty cool if you end up staying over that way. 219 is OK, has some long boring sections but I guess it depends on what you're used to. |
