My 09 Uly has been flawless...been zipping around Yuma and Phoenix last couple months. Grass started growing back in PNW so trailered bike home...backed down off a steep ramp this afternoon off the trailer and started it. Scared me! Sounded like a stuck lifter or rod bearing. Like no oil. So shut off...checked oil, showed overfull so started again...slightly quieter then as it warmed up the clacking went away. Took a few minutes. Found I was still overfull on oil after hot so out came turkey baster to lower oil. You think the oil just drained down after bouncing in a trailer for a few days? The oil pump should have quickly relieved that issue. Got me bothered. Starts nice and quiet now...will try again in a couple days of sitting. Warrentee off in July. Euly | ||

My uly made a collapsed lifter sound on startup at around 12,000 miles. I turned it off immediately and videoed it with my digital camera. The sound went away and my bike now has over 30,000. It's never done it again. Perhaps some little flake of something got into a lifter and it worked itself out? This is one of those things that haunt me from time to time. It wouldn't hurt anything if you changed the oil now just to be safe. Also, cutting open the oil filter to make sure there is no shrapnel in there. But after getting yourself all filthy looking for stuff in the oil and filter, I'll bet you find nothing wrong. My X1 never made any sound like that ever. It did all sorts of other odd things but no "impending doom racket". | ||

I've seen many a Harley fire up and rattle after being trailered to Daytona, Sturgis etc. They do take a little while to pump up again but you're not hurting anything. The cold oil doesn't flow quite as fast so it may take a minute or so to quiet down. No worries!  | ||

On the trailer, the bike receives allot of vibration and movement that allows the oil to drain out of the lifters, rings, oil galleries ect. sitting in the garage, the oil stays were it is do to surface tension. Just my theory!! since no one else mentioned it yet. | ||

Did you have it in gear while being trailered?? | ||

Yeah, left it in gear. Once straps off I use clutch for rear brake and hold the front while backing off the trailer. Not sure how that figures. Euly. | ||

Blk Uly is correct about the the tappets but it's not really surface tension it's just bouncing up and down. The tappets will squirt out a drop every time you hit a bump. The spring tension from an opened valve is constant and will slowly bleed down over time but the added bouncing of a trailer ride seems to help the process. I've trailered a few times and every once in a while mine will bleed out but not always. Must have something to do with where you ended up on the cam at shut down. | ||

Ha ha Motorbike! The bike sounds fine once I let it warm up. Sounds fine starting cold. The last leg of the long trailer trip was the potholes of western MT going over into ID. I think Tootal nailed it and Blk-Slower-Uly has good intuition. Thanks...am happy again. Euly | ||

What I meant about the surface tension it is what keeps the oil in place when garaged, not towed on the trailer . |
