Since going with the Uly, from a sports bike, I have been trying to find an easy "all-weather" solution to bike kit.

I have loads of leather gear but I find that the textile stuff, I thought I would give it a try, is loaded with velcro fixings. My leather gear seems to have little or none of it.

My HG jacket, I got it used to try it out, is driving me NUTS. Its like a fly on honey. Everything sticks to everything else and the more velcro you have the worse it gets. I am forever pulling it apart to re-position it. Also the loops wear out, the hooks rip up other fabric, the jacket is just as heavy as leather, the liner makes me sweat like a pig and you need to treat it to make it waterproof. I am going back to my leathers with a Gore-Tex, army surplus, over jacket/pants.

I hate it too. Tried a First Gear suit because they minimized it but did not fit so ordered one of those Teiz suits which uses gutters under the zips to minimize the velcro. Methinks velcro is the cheap out on the weather proof gear. One must have serious patience to screw with it. Euly

No issues with the velcro on my 1 piece Aerostich suit. Might be worth looking into, it is highly recommended for the typical Uly rider. : )

I suppose I have lots of gear. Leather, textile, plastic, down, waked cotton, etc. Just got in last night from 1700 miles through the cold. 14F in Flagstaff yesterday morning. Talk about ATGATT.

Between velcro, zippers, snaps, buttons, straps, and belts, the only type reliably fastenable is velcro. In the cold wind. In the dark. Wearing gloves. Also always has a large overlap between the pieces, keeping the cold out.

Example: jacket has a really annoying small fine inner zipper on one side and an easy to engage heavy outer zipper offset about two inches. Neither one holds out the cold very well. The wide velcro in between the zippers does that. Easy to engage/disengage fully gloved. That small zipper defies engagement, even bare handed.

Example: The current helmet has the usual old-school strap and two D rings. Then a small plastic snap at the end of the strap to keep the end of the strap from flapping about in the breeze. That dang snap often requires repeated attempts to fasten it. O, for a small patch of velcro! Yes, today the snap goes in favor of patches of loops and hooks.

Example: velcro on the jacket sleeves allows the sleeve openings to be highly adjustable. Can zippers beat that? Nope. Most jackets with zipper sleeves are too loose or too tight. Elastic sleeves are stoopid except for rain jackets.

Velcro IS cheap to buy, to make, and to retrofit or repair. And it works well. Try sticking the pieces together when you take them off, and they won't stick to other things.

$0.02

It is funny that you mention the cuffs on a jacket with Velcro, Dataxman. My HG jacket is very tight on the cuffs, with any type of glove, and a real pain to work with. I guess some things work for some but not others.

I have just bought some very good silk gloves but they do not like Velcro. It rips the Hell out of them big time. I guess I will just need to take more care but I never had a problem before. The HG jacket is history though. I just can not get on with it. Its a bit like governments. All the right ideas but its still no better.

Uylman, sounds FUBAR. My Uvex leather is the only one of three leather jackets that fits *just right*. Zipper cuffs all.

But if I want to wear a t shirt and long sleeves under the HG, it's hard to get the zips to...well, zip. The textile jacket cuffs are huge by comparison. Surprized that yours are not BIG with the velcro to take up the slack. Mine is a First Gear Kilimanjaro. Terrific down to about 14F last week. With ski bibs and snowmobile gloves.

I much prefer the leather to the textile in general, but not here in the winter.

As always, YMMV.
