Oil coming out where the metal end is crimped onto the black plastic shroud, primary end. Without taking it apart to refresh my memory...the O ring just seals the metal to the primary case, right? Anyone have a preferred method of sealing the metal back to the sheath? Would some good heat-shrink do the trick, or should I just keep an eye on primary fluid level until I get sick of checking it, and swap the cable? |

A new o ling should seal it. (Message edited by panhead_dan on December 08, 2010) |

Of course you would have to perform a crutch adjustment as well. |

Not worried about the adjustment, 20k is coming up fast so I'll be doing it anyway. I just thought the o-ring was on the metal part, not between metal and black plastic. All the o-ring seals is the metal to the primary case, but the end of the plastic extends "through" the o-ring if you will... I dunno. I'll pull my spare cable out from under the seat and take a look at it, see how it's built. But, the outside of the metal end on mine is dry; the oil is only on the black plastic part, making me think the leak is between cable parts, not between cable and primary.... |

Make sure your vent hose is clear.A bug made a nest in one a few years ago....The oil came out the clutch cable. |

Ratbuell, My bike was leaking in the same spot as yours. I agree with you, a new o-ring will not fix that leak. I fixed my leak with a new cable. If heat shrink tubing is not affected by oil, a little RTV covered by heat shrink might a good fix. |

O-ring only seals the threaded piece. I used rubber electrical tape on mine until I eventually replaced the cable with the newer style. |

There are some type of heat shrink with glue inside, which comes out when the tube shrinks with the heat. |

If it's the OEM 06 cable, then you'd be better off to replace with a new cable. I believe your old 06 is a raw metal cable inside the housing, where as the new cables are teflon coated. They are MUCH smoother in operation. How much is it leaking? Just enough to be slimey on the black tube? or dripping? If it's just slimey, I'd leave it. It could be years before it gets any worse, and your not going to really lose much of any fluid out of there. If it's dripping, Throw your spare on there, and clean up this one and stow it under your seat in case of emergency. |

Just slimy. I know me...lazy by nature lol. Spare (new) cable lives under the seat anyway and I have a tool roll that lives in the LH saddlebag, and a quart of Syn3 in the right bag. If it decides "I'm gonna let go" all of a sudden...I'll replace it. Otherwise, I'll just add it to my checklist And yes, Mike...it's the OEM cable. Matches my OEM battery! |

Clean the cable housing and sleeve with brake cleaner. Best to do this when the engine is hot. Then after it's cleaned and dry. Apply a drop or two of Super glue, such that it "wicks" in between the cable housing and sleeve. |

Mine has a very slight weep but I just wipe it away every now and then. Unless is bad I would not worry on it. |

You could get the hydraulic clutch kit from Al at American Sport Bike. Sure it's $250 but this would solve your cable-sheath-leaking issue, and the ever annoying allowing-water-in-the-case problem. Just a thought. |

The ever annoying allowing-water-in-the-case problem. This one is solved with a cable tie on the top of the clutch adjustment boot. Simples. |
