I changed the clutch cable today. Noticed last week it was leaking water into the transmission fluid. Not a big job and not the subject of this post.

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but here is what I discovered and thought I would share. The clutch cable on my bike is tie wrapped to the voltage regulator cable near the bottom front of the motor right where it starts to bend towards the clutch area. I can only assume the factory did this to keep the cable from vibrating all over the place. Anyway, when I removed the tie wrap and separated the cables, I noticed the clutch cable had worn through the VR cables protective loom and the insulation surrounding several of the internal wires. I haven't pulled it apart yet but I can see exposed copper on at least 3 of the 5 wires. None appear broken but all will most likely require repair.

Thought some of you might want to check that out as preventative maintenance and before it becomes an issue. Nothing worse than trying to chase an electrical problem.

Just went out to check mine. Have an 09, and the clutch cable routing is different than your 07. Runs clean end to end.

Glad to hear they stopped this practice on the later models. Could be the person who built my bike tie wrapped that point while others did not. It's still a good thing to check because it will do damage over time. I'm approaching 85k miles on mine and am finding many instances where there is wear on the wires where tie wraps were used.

Thanks for posting that, Dirt. The more 'heads-up' the better.

Dirt. Add a cable tie to the top of the cable boot to stop water getting into the transmission fluid via the cable adjuster.

I checked my '06 and found that there was some wear in progress, but not worn through the loom covering yet. The zip tie was not pulled tight enough and allowed a lot of movement, since the regulator does not move with the engine.
