My XT, even with my big rear on it, will not trigger red lights to turn green. My FXDX does not have this issue. Do you guys have this problem? Have you done anything to solve it? I have seen ads for devices that supposedly will trigger the green light, have any of you tried them? Thanks Dan |

I've got one on our Uly and one on my K75, essentially they are magnets that trigger the coils of wire imbedded in the pavement that sense the metal mass of a vehicle. Most motorcycles dont have enough metal to be picked up/ They do work, I've attached to the side stand so they are properly positioned. A big magnet from the hardware store in a similar location will also work |

The new lights going in around here have cameras that use rudimentary machine-vision. First light I hit every day is one of these - I turn on my high-beams and PIAAs about a block away. Sometimes it changes before I get there and I have to hustle. If your lights still use coils in the tarmac, try a big Neodymium magnet. Not sure of the direction, play with the orientation. Here's a helpful Wiki I found - http://www.wikihow.com/Trigger-Green-Traffic-Light s Zack |

I stop right on top of the "line" where the pavement was cut and the coil was inserted, shut off the bike and restart it. This always seems to work, but then I only have one light on the way to work where its a problem, the others seem to pick me/the bike up every time. |

I normally trigger my flux capacitor and this action usually melts the traffic light and all oncoming cars. |

+1 on the flux, has never let me down. |

I ditched the Flux Capacitor and now use "Mr. Fusion"! |

Here is a "killer" magnet that would most certainly trigger a red light and possibly have red light flashing in front of your house (rescue squad). In fact it would probable crush you if you tried to install it by yourself. It has a pull force of 1226.5 lbs and if you get between it and a piece of metal it will probably kill you. Read the specs on this mother. I would certainly be afraid to handle this thing and it only weighs 138.8 oz unless it is sitting on a car top and then you can add the weight of the car to it's weight. Once attached to metal it would probably be impossible to remove. http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BZX 0ZX0Y0-N52 Actually there are other less lethal magnets available that would work better. Magnets are very interesting and cool. http://www.kjmagnetics.com/products.asp?cat=11 |

Can you imagine the torque that magnet produces when it decides to pull to a ferrous object. |

Interesting - my Uly is the first bike I didn't have this problem with. I thought it was the muffler that helped. |

Electraglider, the problem with that magnet is all the sewer covers you ride over in the street would be stuck to the bottom of your bike |

Oklahoma has a new law that just went into effect November 1st to solve this problem for motorcyclists. If the light won't change after waiting through one complete light cycle, the rider is allowed to proceed safely. In case of an accident, the law plainly states that waiting through a complete cycle does not mean that the rider can assume right-of-way. The new law really doesn't help if there's no traffic in sight and the light isn't changing in any direction, but If there's that little traffic, probably no LEOs around either. The main situation in which it helps me is when I'm in a left turn lane by myself but other traffic is triggering the rest of the light cycle. You might look into your state's traffic laws and see if there's something similar on the books. |

In Illinois the law is Reasonable Accommodation, Rider must wait 45 seconds, if no green, rider assumes responsibility for accident if they cause one, allowed to go if safe to do so. |

+1 on the muffler. My Cagiva would never set off the lights. It has an aluminum bash plate. Never had the problem with the Uly with the giant muffler there! As mentioned, place the muffler over a crack/seam. |

The signal triggers are adjustable for sensitivity. If there are problems with a traffic light or series of lights on a regularly traveled route, place a call to the local street maintenance department and give them the location of the signal(s). I have done this a few times where I live (central Kansas), and have always had a favorable resolution to the problem. I have also noticed that if you straddle the cuts in the pavement where the sensor wiring is, and stop just where the sensors start( a few feet back from the crosswalk), the sensitivity seems to be higher than it is right at the crosswalk, and will trigger the light. One then can move up to the crosswalk once the light change is starting. |

I agree on lining your wheels up on the cut in the road. I had one problem light and I used to put down the kick stand for a second and it would trigger it. Years ago my buddy was sitting at a left turn light that crossed 2 lanes of a 4 lane highway. He was a young driver with a license that "timed out" at midnight. It was 11:45 and he still had 10 minutes to get home. He sat at the light for 5 minutes and did not move because there was a cop sitting at the light watching for highway traffic that would run the light. After 5 minutes he decided that the light was not going to change, and the cop must have also known this so he turned on red (with nobody coming). The cop pulled him over! After he took his time and wrote him up for the turning on red ticket, he gave him another one for being out after midnight on a youth license! |

NY state traffic code 1117 says (and I'm paraphrasing from memory here) that you should treat any malfunctioning traffic light as a stop sign, and proceed accordingly. I go through an intersection about 0500-0530 every morning, and usually I am the only vehicle traveling in my direction. I just wait a minute or so and go through when the traffic is clear. I figure if I ever get pulled over I will tell the officer that I was treating the light as a stop sign, since it was malfunctioning by not recognizing my vehicle. |

Call the Dept of Public works for the jurisdiction of the trigger. They assume some liability once notified and they may check the triggers for functionality. Those system are being upgraded by the new camera systems that work by coutning pixels. The engineer sets the pixel count to recognize a predetermined number of cars then the lights are triggered. Thats why a flash of the high beam works so well. It blasts all the pixels and tricks the camera into thinking the traffic backed up. |

Some of the newly paved roads around here they are concealing the wire cuts under the last layer of pavement. Its hit or miss if you don`t know where they put the wires and then they may detect the bike or not.I have an intersection I deal with in the early am like this. Sometimes I treat as a stop sign, other times I go right on red and go a different way. |

I have the big ass magnet on the left side of my rear swing arm and if I stay out of the middle of the lane (stop near the line on the left side) it will trigger almost every time. If it does not trigger, I wait till traffic is clear and proceed with caution. I think FL has a law that favors this, may want to check your local laws. |

You might try some small but VERY powerful magnets out of a computer hard drive. Only a few oz (4?) but might do the job. Diffficult to remove tho. |
