More than a month ago my 07 Uly started running really crappy, and pretty much all at once. Discussion can be found here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/597447.html?1288939238

Well, finally I gave up and had it taken in. Got the call yesterday "you better come in". The engine shows all the evidence of being run with no oil, the pistons are shot and scored, the cylinder walls all ripped up, it's basically a total top end replace estimated at 3K. Now I don't run my bikes without oil in them, so something got clogged or hosed. In fact, I slightly OVERFILLED last time I changed the oil which was less than a thousand miles ago. This is the same bike the headers fell off of last year, ripping out the 02. With 28K miles on it, I'm faced with putting more into it than it's worth, or throwing it away. Man, what a pisser.

Wow that sux.

Major engine failures are uncommon on Buells. A top end rebuild wouldn't be too tough to do yourself, if you got the skills, tools, garage, ect. Hire out the machine work, buy new parts and assemble it yourself for a lot less than 3K.

Where did you take it to have the work done? Eastside in Bellevue? Downtown in Renton?

Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

You probably could make a '09 engine work by swapping some of the '07 parts on to it. (FI system, ect)

Any used '06 or '07 XB engine would be an easy swap.......

I'm wondering if you had some kind of failure in the oiling system that was preventing the motor from receiving proper lubrication.

Didn't the oil pump gear change in 07?
I know my 07 was made in like July of 06 and it was not an early number.
Maybe the pump gear change took place "during" the model year and this is an older version.

But Why no oil light if you lost pressure?

Who are those guys who make the big-bore kits for Sportsters? It might be time for one of those. I believe the old Bad Web member, "Skinstains" installed one on his Uly. It seemed to do him well.

Geez Skifast' - That really is dire. Yours is the first Uly I've heard of deoiling & going into self-destruct mode. Be curious what the oil pump looks like. If it was oil starved (hate to say it but) whats the bottom end look like ? Dont want to see you spend all that $ on the top - only to have the bottom be knackered too. Wonder if Dr Greg still has his running gear from 'deer slayer' Uly. He had it apart just before the collision for repair of plug holes - it was a good motor. You might check with him. I know other folks have also wrecked a few XBs - how about an APB on BadWeb?? Sorry for your troubles. j

Ya might want to try these guys as well. They seem to be a Buell and Harley salvage operation.

Sorry to hear that Craig. I was having oil pressure problems for a while and it was because I had accidentally put the wrong oil filter on. Fortunately I didn't suffer any noticeable engine damage. Did you have any warning by your oil pressure light?

Not without converting the bike to match the '09....the engine case is different, making it pretty much impossible to "change the electronics". Main difference being the change from cam timing plate to crank sensor.

Used engine would be the way to go for sure.
Could be a damaged bottom end if it had an oiling problem.

Yes, I still have it, but it is back in the bike and I am in no shape to pull it. Plus I probably need to keep it; I can't seem to keep the rubber side down these days...

Sorry to hear of your situation; hope something works out.

If your head & bottom end are OK, this may be a good way to go.

I have met the owner of NRHS and he KNOWS Buells. He's also a good guy and they do good work. Sorry to hear about your engine and really hope things work out for you. Give NRHS a shout and see what they can do to help.

Really sorry to hear of your problem Craig. You've had a really bad time with that Uly. Hopefully you can get it fixed for a reasonable outlay. Of course, if you elected to part it out, that would be completely understandable at this point.

My guess is you got one of those "late Friday afternoon before a three-day weekend" or "early Tuesday morning after a solid 3-day drunk weekend" build bikes. I'm sure even Buell let one or two of those out of the door.

The Buell factory in East Troy did not build the engines, they were built in some H-D(spit) factory somewhere else, shipped to East Troy and then the bike was assembled around it.

You definately don't want to put a new top end on it without first locating and rectifying the cause of the failure. All the damage you mention amounts to symptoms of a problem not the problem itself. If it were me...I would get a used 07 engine and do the swap. I would also flush the swingarm and replace the oil lines (at least blow them out) as they could have imploded and only starve you of oil when they get hot and mushy. I would keep the blown engine for spares as well. Pinwall Cycle in Ohio is a bike breaker and always have Buells coming in. Swapping the engine is really an easy job if you have some tools and a bit of wrenching ability. I'm sure there is a fellow Badwebber near you that would help you out if you need it. You could also part out the beat engine to finance the swap if need be. Perfect timing really, it's winter time and a nice little project that will get you to know your Uly on a totaly new level.

So, called HD customer service today, advised to have the dealer call 'tech services' but the guy pretty much told me "that bike's two years out of warranty." I'm not holding out for any assistance from the motor company. At this point I'm strongly considering parting it out. It's a shame, I love the handling but.... Maybe the new Triumphs?

SFB' - That IS a shame - not much value there, I wouldnt think. I wouldnt quite give up on a used engine swap yet. See what the universe provides / develops in next month or so. I called Tacoma triumph - where I take my 06 Tiger for work I cant do (remap ECU etc) - they wont get the new 800XC until spring. so ya got some time. j

Craig,

Keep us posted if you do decide to part it out.

We don't live too far from each other and I might be interested in taking a short drive to Woodinville for some parts....

See Craig,
You should buy my 08 and part out the 06. Sorry to hear they're not taking you serious at the dealer.
