Took advantage of our unseasonably warm weather here in MN (69 degrees!) yesterday. I was driving down the freeway heading home doing 80 mph according to my speedo. For some reason though it didn't feel like 80 due to the feel and the other cars. Felt more like 75. Has anyone else ever noticed a 5 mph error on the high side, especially you guys with the GPS systems? Or are these speedos pretty much right on? This is an 06 uly with stock tires. thanks. |

Best bet is to test it against a GPS. I can't recall if my Uly spedo was off, but both my BMWs (past K100, current F800GS) are around 5mph low at 55 mpg. Plus all my VW's have always been 5 mph low across most of the range. Maybe it is a German thing, but I read they do it because a study showed making a spedo read 5mph high cut way down in crashes. |

I have takeoff tires on my Uly now and the speedo is almost perfectly accurate. However, I had pilot road 2 tires on before and the speedo was off by about 4-5%. So at 100mph indicated on the speedo, I was really going about 95mph. |

I range anywhere from dead on to 7 mph low. Running Distanzias with a 160 on the rear. Seems to vary a lot with the terrain. |

4000RPM in 5th = 80mph. The XBs read a few MPH high. |

Mine is consistently 4mph off at all speeds. Very rarely will you find a spedo that is dead accurate. Since I know the discrepancy and the fact that it is consistent, It doesn't bother me and I also frequently ride with a GPS, in which case I don't look at the spedo anyway. |

At 80 indicated my'06 is at 76 according to my GPS. Keeps me from getting tickets when I feel like I am pressing it. |

On the 08+ bikes at least, you can adjust the speedo with TunerPro. |

~3850 RPM in 5th: 80 on the speedo, 77 on the GPS. According to my GPS, my Uly runs 3 MPH slower than the speedometer reading, everywhere I've looked (from about 25 - 110). I have to admit I didn't look too long when I was going 110 (well, 107, anyway)... |

Rear tire wear has affect too. With new tire on rear speedo is about 3 mph slower, at a given speed, than a worn out tire. At least that has been my observation. |

My speedo indicates about 5 mph fast against my GPS |

Well then that about sums it up - I'm not going crazy! Now that I know it's a common thing, I'll adjust my speed accordingly. Thanks for all the input. Greg |

With a fresh 616 on the rear my speedo is about 7% optimistic per my Zumo 550 GPS. |

Mine reads 3-4mph faster than actual. |

This is actually standard for most cars and motorcycles, to be 3-5% optimistic. My guess as to why would be 1)to slow people down a bit (think they're going faster than they really are), or 2) to play on the safe side to avoid law suits regarding "my speedo said I was going 65 but I got a ticket for going 'whatever speed over that'". Since I got my GPS, I haven't had a car or bike that's been dead on accurate. |

Both my Ulysses and Harley Roadglide are 3-4 mph low by the gps at 70 mph. My wife's HHR seems to be very close. |

Uly dude, no one has excused you from going crazy, the jury might still be out on that. We have only cleared up that the speedometers are actually not accurate!

My 06 with a brand new 616 on the rear shows a 4% error versus the GPS. Speedo reads higher than GPS. 50 speedo is 48 gps; 100 speedo is 96 gps. I do agree with Froggy - 4k rpm in fifth is 80mph. |

I always said Vern, you break things down to their most simple form, truely a cognitive genius! Still crazy eh? You might be on to something, could explain a few things. Hey, I resemble that comment! (Ziggy) |

I think 5 mph 'over read' on speedo is good rule of thumb. My 08' is 4 over @ 55 & 5 over @ 75 as per Zumo, on a Nearly new D616. |

Actually, it has more to do with cost. Or, so I've been told at work for the last 25 years. In an electric speedo, the difference between displaying 5 MPH and 105 MPH is simply computer programing; I'm not sure how making the speedo 7% off would change the cost of anything. |

I tested mine with a Zumo 550 and it was 3 to 4 mph, at 80 mph, down on the bikes speedo. Its better than being the other way around I guess. |
