I agree with your "ever-expanding segment" thought I bet these SUV (adventure) motorcycles are the future. Comfortable to ride, They handle nice on rough roads, look nice, don't look like cruisers, crotch rockets or UJM's. You don't have to polish then 2X longer then you ride them, and insurance is cheep. And I bet the ratio of how many adventure bikes actually go off road is the same ratio as how many crouch rockets actually go on the track. (Message edited by towpro on November 02, 2010) | ||

Has anyone heard anything, good or bad about the new Yamaha Super Tenere? I saw one at bike night last week. It's new enough in the U.S. that the Power Sport guy's eyes glazed over when I started asking questions. It seemed like a nice bike though. Very comfortable for my 5 foot 10 frame. Good ground clearance, 1200cc side by side mill with 6 speed tranny. I just don't know much about Yamahas. I think this bike has been in europe a while but just don't know much about it. | ||

Cycle World's current issue has a first look at the new Super Tenere. It's not the greatest looking bike...it doesn't even look weird enough to love (like the Uly)...but it does look like it means business and has a near-legendary reputation in Europe (like the Africa Twin). ABS, traction control, two electronic ride modes, reasonable price...this is what I want. They're only available by special order through Yamaha, set to deliver in May 2011, I think. And Yamaha's quality is very strong. I do like the look of the Honda...muscular and fast. The new VFR really works for me. But, Yamaha looks like it will beat Honda to the American market by a year or more. When you REALLY want a new adventure-tourer, it's hard to wait that long. I would like to see them in person to see if they "speak" to me. If one does (and what would it say?), I might find that it's a better buy than the Multistrada (though it's definitely no Ducati). Then comes the discussion with the wife: "But you already have one that's tall and can go off-road and has luggage." "Yeah, but that one's a collector's item...can't sell that one." Erik Buell Racing should sell a kit for turning the 1125 into a ULY. Get a 1125 for under 5 grand and for another 5 turn it into a Adventure Touring bike. | ||

Even 'if' that happened, which I think is pretty remote, the dealer network would suck even worse than it did - with less dealers, and that whole thing. I'll be looking at the Yam/Honda bikes (that are available) really hard in the spring. Fair prices, lots of dealers, easy to get parts and best part is they're both still in business - what's not to like. . | ||

Erik Buell Racing should sell a kit for turning the 1125 into a ULY. Get a 1125 for under 5 grand and for another 5 turn it into a Adventure Touring bike. Sport Touring yes. Adventure? Not with the 1125 gearing and power. You would need a new transmission, final drive, and EFI set up. You also need to look at the technology in all the others hitting the market, ABS, Electronic Suspension, Traction Control, Trip computers, HD Electrical systems for lights and accessories. You may like those things or not but it is still the market a new Adv Bike has to compete for sales in. I have had three Buells and loved every one. I believe in Buell and I it kills me we have lost the Blast as a training bike. But for Buell to manufacture a bike for a small market it would have to be VERY expensive so you would have a high priced bike with none of the features expected by buyers of a high priced bike. For Buell to get back into the market they are going to need unlimited funds to blow or they will need to team up with an existing company like Can-AM who has the ABS, suspension, and traction technology already and design a new bike built around that. From all I have read about Eric Buell and the quality of the Can-AM's Spyder it would blow the Adv. world away. | ||

There's a good question, where's Honda in all this? When Triumph rolls out an ADV bike before big red, something must be wrong. I wonder if they're planning something huge........... I would never shy away from a Honda - as long as they made what I like! | ||

Not sure where you are getting your prices, but since you are in Tennessee, I think you need to convert European prices to US $. The Yamaha is $13,900, and I haven't seen a $ price for the Triumphs yet. | ||

Yamaha Super-Heavy-Tenere. You get bags and topcase and fluids on that pig and you get up to 600lbs easy. Who'd want to pick that up off the ground. Why can't they make one of these bikes under 400 lbs? | ||

Sub 400 pounds would be sweet...even my KLR, 650 single is close to 500 with bags and loaded up ready to roll. BUT it cost me right at 5k NOT 20k that a 1200GSA would. Speed and light weight cost money. | ||

Speed and light weight cost money. That is so true. The Uly was made light yet people wanted ABS, Cruise Control etc. It all adds weight and when your done with all the goodies you might as well have gotten a GS!! As far as Yamaha's go, I rode them for years, both in the dirt and street. Fill with gas, turn key, push button, have fun!! I never had any issues with any of my Yamaha's. 2 dirt bikes, 2 trials bikes and 3 street bikes. | ||
